How to Make an American Quilt
(1995)
Drama
Director Jocelyn Moorhouse's film adaptation of the
novel by Whitney Otto stars Winona Ryder as Finn Dodd, a
Berkeley graduate student on summer hiatus at her
grandmother's home to work on her thesis and ponder a
marriage proposal from her boyfriend, Sam (Dermot
Mulroney). Finn's grandma, Hy (Ellen Burstyn), lives
with her great aunt, Glady Jo (Anne Bancroft), at their
idyllic Northern California home. The two fiery women
meet with seven older female relatives and close friends
for a regular quilting bee, led by Anna (Maya Angelou).
Over the course of the summer, Finn contemplates her
future while gaining insight into love and relationships
from the different members of the quilting bee. Their
experiences are brought to life as each woman shares a
unique tale with the confused young woman. The
interwoven memories of each sage member of the quilting
bee--including Constance (Kate Nelligan); Anna's
daughter, Mariana (Alfre Woodard); and Finn's
free-spirited mother, Sally (Kate Capshaw)--become
lessons in love, pain, and emotional growth for Finn as
the women work to make her wedding quilt. Each memory
becomes a vivid flashback subtly weaving the past and
present together to create a colorful collection of
stories, featuring young stars including Claire Danes
and Samantha Mathis as the individual women in their
youth. A tribute to women's friendship and camaraderie,
HOW TO MAKE AN AMERICAN QUILT shines with a cast of
all-star actresses.

Little Women (1994)
Drama
The fourth screen adaptation of Louisa May
Alcott’s classic 1869 novel, LITTLE WOMEN, is given a
realistic and rounded treatment by screenwriter Jo
Swicord and Australian director Gillian Armstrong, whose
perspective emphasizes a feminist tone. The story
chronicles the lives of a mother and four daughters and
their daily toils during the Civil War in the absence of
their father, a Union army chaplain. Winona Ryder (in an
Oscar-nominated performance) is vibrant as Jo, the least
conventional of the sisters. Christian Bale captures the
ebullience of their neighbor, Laurie, whose company Jo
enjoys so much it seems inevitable that they will end up
together. Kirsten Dunst (at age 12) gives a fiery
performance as the younger Amy, proving even more
willful than Jo; Claire Danes brings a mysterious
otherworldliness to Beth. LITTLE WOMEN, touchingly
rendered, has many subtle moments and an appropriately
moving visual sense to accompany the narrative. Susan
Sarandon and Gabriel Byrne also star in this
well-crafted film.

The Age of Innocence (1993)
Drama
Set in 1870s New York, Martin Scorsese’s THE AGE
OF INNOCENCE examines the tyranny of tradition and
family heritage--and the tragic consequences of breaking
society's unspoken rules. Newland Archer (Daniel
Day-Lewis), an upstanding gentleman and partner in a
lucrative and conservative law firm, is engaged to the
perfect society woman, the pretty and polished May
Welland (Winona Ryder). They are hoping to push forward
their wedding date when Newland meets Countess Ellen
Olenska (Michelle Pfeiffer), May's beautiful,
cosmopolitan, and scandal-ridden cousin. Ellen, who has
resided in Europe and cultivated a more permissive
continental sensibility, believes she's found a kindred
spirit in Newland. Slowly the two fall in love, and
Ellen entices Newland with the vision of a life not
ruled by the rigid guidelines of New York's stuffy upper
crust. But May represents all the temptations and
benefits of wealth, position, and propriety. Newland
must make the painful choice between a passionate life
with Ellen and a placid, safe life with May--the life he
was born and raised to lead. In adapting the classic
novel by Edith Wharton, Scorsese meticulously
reconstructs the elegant world of mid-19th-century
Manhattan, using an onslaught of materialistic
vices--including an endless barrage of sumptuous
foods--to capture the elite world even more
fastidiously.

Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
Suspense/Horror
A seductive retelling of the legendary tale, BRAM
STOKER'S DRACULA is Francis Ford Coppola's opulent,
erotic, blood-filled feast. Count Dracula (played with
irresistible intensity by Gary Oldman) reunites with his
soul mate, Mina (Winona Ryder), after four centuries.
Mina's friend Lucy (Sadie Frost) succumbs to the deadly
bite of Dracula while Renfield (Tom Waits), locked in an
asylum, eagerly waits for his master's return. Mina's
fiancé, Jonathan Harker (Keanu Reeves), with the help
of the eccentric Professor Van Helsing (Anthony
Hopkins), attempts to save Mina's life and soul before
she can become Dracula's eternal bride.
After Dracula attacks Mina’s friend Lucy (Sadie
Frost), Dr. Jack Seward (Richard E. Grant) calls in the
legendary Professor Van Helsing (Anthony Hopkins) to
cure Lucy’s "disease of the blood." Jonathan
escapes from the castle and he and Mina are married
while Lucy dies and is resurrected as a vampire. When
Dracula appears to Mina in her sleep, she declares her
undying love for him. Professor Van Helsing, Jack
Seward, and Lucy’s fiancé, Arthur Holmwood (Cary
Elwes), join Jonathan and travel to Transylvania to
destroy Dracula, but Mina tries to save her tortured
lover.
Musician Tom Waits appears in the film as Renfield, a
Victorian lunatic singing the praises of Dracula. Ornate
costume design and lighting awash in shades of blood
make this film a seductive and scary must-see.
In his version of the oft-told tale, Francis Ford
Coppola takes Bram Stoker's archetypical horror story
and accentuates the romantic angle. Blood still flows in
large amounts, and Coppola opted to do all the
eye-pleasing visual effects in-camera, utilizing shadow
puppets, smoke, miniatures, and other time-honored
tricks of the trade--creating a visual style not unlike
that of a storybook come to life.

Night on Earth (1991)
Comedy
Director Jim Jarmusch's episodic slice-of-life drama
follows the adventures of five different cabdrivers in
five different cities all over the world. In Los
Angeles, a young female driver (Winona Ryder) charms her
snooty passenger--an agent (Gena Rowlands) who believes
she’s found her latest star in the tomboyish cabbie.
In New York, a man (Giancarlo Esposito) gets into a taxi
only to find that his immigrant driver (Armin
Mueller-Stahl) has no idea how to drive. The Paris
segment features an angry sightless woman (Beatrice
Dalle) who provokes her African driver (Isaach de
Bankole). In Rome, Roberto Benigni stars as a
hyperactive taxi driver who confesses his odd sexual
practices to a clergyman (Paolo Bonacelli) and is
shocked when the priest has a heart attack. The film’s
climactic scene in Helsinki follows a cabdriver who
listens to a tragic and poignant tale from one of his
three inebriated passengers only to top him with his
own, sadder story. Colorfully photographed by Frederick
Elmes, NIGHT ON EARTH features an original score by the
masterful Tom Waits. Jarmusch handles his various
stories--as well as actors--with his traditional
lighthearted sincerity, resulting in another original
tale from one of independent film’s most distinct
directors.

Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Science
Fiction/Fantasy
In Tim Burton's EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, a suburban
fairy tale with incredibly imaginative sets, an Avon
lady, Peg Boggs (Dianne Wiest), discovers the
half-finished experiment--a man/monster named Edward
(Johnny Depp)--of a mad scientist (played magically by
Vincent Price) living in the neighborhood's old
abandoned castle. The scientist died before replacing
the shy man's large shears with real hands. When Peg
attempts to bring Edward into her suburban world, to
live among her skeptical family (husband Alan Arkin and
daughter Winona Ryder) and gossipy neighbors, his
hands--dangerous yet capable of creating things of great
beauty--make for some awkward, funny, and poignant
situations: Edward as a topiary gardener, Edward as a
cutting-edge hair stylist. EDWARD SCISSORHANDS is a
story about tolerance, difference, and creativity as
much as it is a story of a young man's coming of age
(the young man in question is, of course, a monster). In
the ironically surreal world of Edward's suburban
community, he must try to find his place in it, and in
the world at large.

1969 (1988)
Drama
In the twilight of the 1960s, Scott and Ralph, two
college kids from a stuffy, upper-middle class suburban
town, decide to spend the summer on the road, living out
of their van and experiencing all the freedom the
counterculture has to offer. Family conflicts and the
harsh realities of the war in Vietnam, however,
interfere with their idyll. Scott's older brother, who
Scott self-rightously criticized for going to war, is

Beetlejuice (1988)
Comedy
In the surreal, wonderfully cartoon-like comedy
BEETLEJUICE, a childless couple, Barbara and Adam (Geena
Davis and Alec Baldwin), move to the country only to be
killed in a car accident while passing over a quaint
covered bridge. Their ghosts return to their beloved
Victorian home, and find the HANDBOOK FOR THE RECENTLY
DECEASED, which not only lets them know they're dead,
but comes in handy when they learn that they can
continue to live in their house, even though a new
family--from the land of the living--is moving in. The
new owners, fresh from the city, are quite a strange
group themselves, and include the overpowering hipster
mom Delia (Catherine O'Hara), her pompous SoHo interior
designer Otho (Glenn Shadix), her meek husband Charles
(Jeffrey Jones), and their morose teenage daughter Lydia
(Winona Ryder), who befriends the ghostly couple. Though
the threesome attempt to scare Delia from ruining the
house with redecoration and her unpleasant personality,
their attempts fail. As a last resort, they call upon
the services of the demented, terrifying, but hilarious
"bioexorcist," "Beetlejuice"
(Michael Keaton). Director Tim Burton scores big with
witty site gags, incredible special effects and sets,
and a unique ensemble of characters. BEETLEJUICE is a
visually inventive and imaginative comedy taken to a
uniquely grotesque and funny level by the manic
performance of Michael Keaton in the title role.

Robards), and protected from the realities of the

Ft. Worth. Initially, Gemma refuses, but gradually she
is overwhelmed with a deep desire to know her real
mother. One night Gemma runs away from home and winds up
at the doorsteps of her mother's home, where she lives
with her new husband (Guich Koock). Gemma learns about
life in the city with Juanelle, a hard-living
independent woman who spends her days working at a local
beauty parlor and her nights dancing at a saloon. Gemma
grows from an innocent girl to a young woman,
befriending Rory (Rob Lowe), a mentally disabled and
handsome young man who captures Gemma's heart. Rory and
Gemma begin an innnocent courtship that quicky becomes
more serious when Rory asks Gemma to marry him. Although
Gemma is only 13, she becomes like a mother and wife to
the young man and is profoundly affected by their close
relationship. As Gemma learns about the realities of
