Wild
Wild West (1999)
Action/Adventure
and Science Fiction/Fantasy
Barry Sonnenfeld is reunited with his MEN IN BLACK star Will
Smith in this gadget-soaked romp based (loosely) on the 1960s
television show. WILD WILD WEST supplies many impressive visuals
(thanks to brilliant production designer Bo Welch) and some
hearty laughs. Will Smith is James West, a Civil War hero and
U.S. marshal inclined to shoot first and ask questions later.
His partner is the wacky inventor and pseudointellectual Artemus
Gordon (Kevin Kline). The team is created when the world’s
leading scientists are kidnapped by a diabolical madman named
Dr. Arliss Loveless (Kenneth Branagh), and President Ulysses S.
Grant (also played by Kevin Kline) wants his two best men on the
job. Loveless’s machines have the creepy fun feeling of EDWARD
SCISSORHANDS (Welch again)--many of them have a spider
motif--and Artemus Gordon rivals him with his own fun
inventions. An odd but enjoyable blend of science fiction and
old-school Western, WILD WILD WEST is packed with cool images
and slick action sequences.

Enemy
of the State (1998)
Action/Adventure
and Thriller
Robert Dean (Will Smith) is a labor lawyer who is
unknowingly in possession of evidence related to a serious
politically motivated crime. Government agents eager to hide
their guilt believe that Dean is on to them, and proceed to turn
his life upside-down, ruin his reputation, and frame him for
various incidents, thanks to the latest in high-tech government
surveillance techniques. In an attempt to clear his name and
reclaim his life, Dean teams up with the reclusive Brill (Gene
Hackman), a former federal employee who has as much high-tech
equipment and expertise as the government itself. Hackman's role
is an extension of Harry Caul, the character he portrayed in
Francis Ford Coppola's brilliant 1974 film, THE CONVERSATION.
Smith scores as a man who is desperate to reclaim his identity
and prove his innocence. This intense technological thrill-ride
from director Tony Scott questions how much access the
government should have to the communications of private
citizens, and leaves the viewer with the unsettling feeling that
Big Brother is definitely watching. Watch for the uncredited
appearances of Jason Robards, Seth Green, Tom Sizemore, and
Philip Baker Hall.

Six
Degrees of Separation (1993)
Drama
Fifth Avenue socialite Ouisa Kittredge
(Stockard Channing)
and her purveyor of high-art husband Flan (Donald Sutherland),
are pedigree parents of "two at Harvard and one at
Groton." But the privileged insular world inhabited by the
Kittredge family, as well as their public status as
distinguished arbiters of culture, makes them easy prey for a
consummate con-artist like Paul (Will Smith). One night, he
mysteriously shows up at their front door - injured and
bleeding- claiming to be Sidney Poitier's son and a close
college crony of the Kittredges' Ivy League progeny. Impressing
Ouisa and Flan with his articulate literary expositions, Paul
proves to be a sharp-witted, learned young man with epicurean
taste and surprising culinary skill. His highbrow facade is so
charmingly persuasive, Paul soon has the Kittredges loaning him
money, putting him up for the night and taking satisfaction in
his appraisal of their posh lifestyle. Much to the Kittredge's
shock Paul is revealed to be a highly persuasive con-man, who
has charmed his way into many upper-crust homes along the upper
East side with his wit and insider knowledge. As Paul's plot
unravels he becomes an urban legend of the upper crust, a witty
anecdote to banter about at cocktail parties. However, he has a
profound effect on the many individuals who encounter him,
linking them in their shared experience. This film version of
John Guare's highly successful stage play features remarkable
ensemble acting and incredibly witty dialogue with an insider's
ear for the excesses and delights of upper crust Manhattan.

Where
the Day Takes You (1992) Drama
Stripped of sentimentality, this film visits homeless teens
and young adults who survive on the margins of society. Living
by begging, theft and prostitution, this loose-knit community
forms an extended family. King (Dermot Mulroney) is the
unofficial patriarch looking after the motley crew of addicts
and runaways. He especially works hard to keep Greg (Sean Astin),
a troubled boy, away from a local drug dealer. But all King's
street smarts are not enough to protect his friends from danger.
Director Marc Rocco's 1992 film features a dream cast of young
actors before they were stars.
