Interview
with the Vampire (1994)
Suspense/Horror
Horror author Anne Rice penned the screenplay for this
full-blooded adaptation of her novel, which chronicles the life of
18th-century nobleman Louis (Brad Pitt) after he is bitten by
powerful, charismatic vampire Lestat (Tom Cruise). Though enthralled
with the undead lifestyle at first, Louis is unable to warm up to
killing humans and grows despondent. To comfort Louis, Lestat
creates another vampire (Kirsten Dunst in a star-making peformance),
a young girl who from then on cannot age. Antonio Banderas appears
as Armand, a 400-year-old vampire, and Christian Slater plays the
radio producer who interviews the remorseful Louis.
Director Neil Jordan captures the lush decadence and erotic fervor
of the novel, infusing the film with rich, dusky tones. The big
budget is well used to bring each period and place to sharply
detailed life, and there is no skimping on the blood or immortal
angst. Thandie Newton has a small role as Louis's Creole servant
near the beginning of the film, and Jordan regular Stephen Rea
appears as a Parisian vampire theater star. INTERVIEW broke weekend
box-office records when it premiered and has since earned a spot in
the pantheon of great vampire films.

The
Firm (1993)
Drama
Sydney Pollack directs Tom Cruise in this fast-paced legal
thriller based on John Grisham’s best-selling novel. Lured by
extraordinary financial perks, Mitch McDeere, a young and hungry
Harvard Law student, turns down offers at the top law firms to take
a position at a small but wealthy Memphis firm. Mitch, a boy from
the wrong side of the tracks fueled by ambition and greed, ignores
his wife Abby's initial misgivings about the suspiciously
paternalistic practices of his new employers. It's only when two of
his fellow lawyers die in a mysterious accident that Mitch begins to
share her apprehensions. He then launches an investigation into the
true nature of the firm and discovers that it is a front for a
complex and sinister web of organized crime, one from which no
lawyer has managed to escape alive. Solid storytelling and fine
performances bring this seemingly improbable situation straight into
reality.

Days

Action/Adventure
Cole Trickle (Tom Cruise) is a young, cocky hotshot with little
stock car driving experience and a lot of raw talent. Trickle’s
uncanny ability to make all the right moves on the racetrack wins
him the backing of Tim Dolan (Randy Quaid), who wants to put him in
a car. Eventually he wins the support of grizzled former driver
Harry Hogge (Robert Duvall), a NASCAR legend who sees that Trickle
has the potential to be a great driver. Determined to make it to the
top, Trickle develops a healthy rivalry with veteran racer Rowdy
Burns (Michael Rooker). Along the way, he romances Dr. Claire
Lewicki (Nicole Kidman), a beautiful neurosurgeon. Hogge’s
mentoring (and a potential tragedy) leads Trickle through the
dramatic process of self-discovery, which ultimately makes him a
better driver. Directed by Tony Scott, DAYS OF THUNDER is
reminiscent of his TOP GUN, the film that rocketed Cruise to
stardom. Scott uses spectacular driving and racing scenes in this
film, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Sound.

The
Color of Money (1986)
Drama
Martin Scorsese's THE COLOR OF MONEY picks up where Robert
Rossen's 1961 film THE HUSTLER left off. Fast Eddie Felson (Paul
Newman), now middle-aged, finds the image of his youthful self in a
pool hustler named Vincent Lauria (Tom Cruise). Trying to relive his
past days of glory through the cocky but inexperienced youngster,
Fast Eddie takes on the role of Vincent's manager and mentor. But
Fast Eddie didn't count on having to contend with Vincent's smart,
sexy, and extremely ambitious girlfriend. The three characters
become engaged in an emotionally complicated power struggle as they
make their way to Atlantic City, where Vincent plans to compete in
his first pool tournament.
Scorsese’s, as well as Newman’s, love for the character of Fast
Eddie shines through in every frame of this sequel, something that
didn’t go unnoticed by the academy (earning Newman the Best Actor
Oscar). Playing the young upstart, Cruise steps up to Newman’s
challenge, delivering an energetic performance that cemented his
place at the top of the young Hollywood elite. Robbie Robertson’s
bluesy score reflects the smoky interiors of the various pool halls
that Fast Eddie and Vincent haunt, adding another layer of moodiness
to the already stylish proceedings.

Legend
(1986)
Science Fiction/Fantasy
Director Ridley Scott's lush fantasy film stars the young Tom
Cruise as Jack, a peasant who lives in an enchanted forest with his
beloved Lili (Mia Sara). One day, while quietly gamboling in a
glade, the pair is distracted by the appearance of trolls, minions
of the evil Lord of Darkness (Tim Curry). The cloven-footed,
cavern-dwelling monster, long banished to the earth's nether
regions, has sent the creatures on a mission to seize the horn of a
unicorn, thereby plunging the planet into a frigid darkness over
which he alone will reign. Things go from bad to worse as Lili
succumbs to the forces of darkness, and Jack must assemble a motley
band of elves to free her from bondage and return sunlight to the
earth's surface. Sumptous art direction and overwhelming special
effects are once again a testament to Scott's powers of visual
invention.

pursuit of a scholarship, however, brings him at odds with his
combative coach (Craig T. Nelson). While rebelling against his coach
and his town, Stef takes up with Lisa Litski (Lea Thompson), an
attractive schoolmate and talented saxophone player. Cruise
graduated to leading man status with this film, one of many early
1980s pictures with strong teen identities. His sexy, defiant
presence carries the film. First time director Michael Chapman
(cinematographer of TAXI DRIVER and many other films) proves himself
especially adept in capturing the intense football sequences.

The
Outsiders (1983)
Drama
Set in 1966; Produced and released in 1983.
Francis Ford Coppola's stylized teen melodrama is based on the
popular novel by S. E. Hinton. In 1960s Tulsa, the "right"
and "wrong" sides of the tracks are represented by rival
gangs, the upscale Socs and the underprivileged Greasers. Darrel
Curtis (Patrick Swayze) is doing his best to raise his two younger
brothers, Sodapop (Rob Lowe in his first film role) and Ponyboy (C.
Thomas Howell). Sensitive Ponyboy is a budding writer in love with
Cherry (Diane Lane), the unobtainable beauty from the enemy gang.
When Ponyboy's buddy, troubled Johnny Cade (Ralph Macchio), kills
one of the Socs in self-defense, their friend Dallas (Matt Dillon)
helps the two youths hide out in an abandoned country church. There
they live as exiles from a society that doesn't want them. But not
all is lost, when Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dallas save some children
caught in a fire they become unlikely heroes.
The young cast is the jewel of this sensitive, moving film. Tom
Cruise and Emilio Estevez play Greasers, and pop singer Leif Garrett
plays rich-kid Bob. Dillon also starred that year in another S.
E.Hinton adaptation directed by Coppola--the fascinating and
extremely entertaining RUMBLE FISH.
