Knots
(2005)
Director Greg Lombardo looks at
the relationship game from a male standpoint in this comedy about
dating, sex, marriage, and infidelity. KNOTS is the story of three
guys whose overlapping love lives entangle them in a complicated
web of love, passion, and deceit. Shortly after moving to a new
home in Manhattan, Dave (Scott Cohen) meets a sexy lawyer (Paulina
Porizkova), who makes him question his devotion to his wife (Annabeth
Gish). Meanwhile, smooth-talking playboy Cal (John Stamos) claims
that longtime girlfriend Emily (Tara Reid) is "the one,"
yet doesn't hesitate to move in on his pal Jake's (Michael Leydon
Campbell) woman. These events are just the first few in a long
line of tumultuous happenings that affect the lives the three men
and their partners. Darker in mood than most films on similar
subject matters, KNOTS offers a fresh perspective on the politics
of contemporary courtship.

Just
Visiting (2001)
Comedy
French writer-director Jean-Marie Poirי retools his 1993
European box-office hit comedy, LES VISITEURS, with the two
original stars, Jean Reno (THE PROFESSIONAL) and Christian Clavier
(who co-wrote both films and is France's answer to Jim Carrey)
reprising their roles. On the eve of his wedding, 12th Century
knight Count Thibault of Malfete (Reno), mistakenly kills his
beloved Princess Rosalind (Christina Applegate), while under an
evil spell. Grief-stricken, Thibault enlists a wizard (Malcolm
McDowell) to send him back in time to avert the murder. When the
wizard's potion malfunctions, Thibault and his faithful servant,
Andrי (Clavier) are deposited in 21st Century Chicago, where
they meet museum curator Julia Malfete (Applegate), who is the
living image of Rosalind. Believing Thibault to be an eccentric
cousin, Julia takes the bewildered Frenchmen home, where they
encounter (and destroy) a vast array of modern conveniences.
Desperate to return to his proper time, Thibault enlists Julia's
help against the wishes of her controlling, money-hungry fiancי,
Hunter (Matthew Ross). Meanwhile, Andrי falls for a pretty,
free-spirited gardener, Angelique (Tara Reid). This slapstick,
fish-out-of-water comedy-fantasy introduces American audiences to
one of the French film industry's most successful
writer-director-comedian teams.

Dr. T
and the Women (2000)
Comedy and Romance
Robert Altman follows up the good-natured COOKIE'S FORTUNE
with this biting satire of an upper-class elitist Dallas
community. Richard Gere plays Sullivan "Sully" Travis
(better known as Dr. T), a man whose good looks and overflowing
charm have made him the most popular gynecologist in all of Texas.
Things begin to go wrong for Dr. T when his beautiful wife, Kate (Farrah
Fawcett), begins to lose her sanity. He sends her to a mental
hospital with the hopes of a full recovery, but her regression
into childhood seems to be permanent. Adding to the mass confusion
is an unexpected visit from his alcoholic sister-in-law, Peggy
(Laura Dern), who brings along her three children, as well as the
constant battles between Dr. T's two daughters: the
soon-to-be-married Dee Dee (Kate Hudson) and the jealous Connie
(Tara Reid). Upon meeting his country club's new assistant golf
pro, Bree (Helen Hunt), Dr. T finally feels like he's met his
match--a beautiful, independent woman who has no desire to be
swept off her feet. Trying to juggle the pressures of his personal
and professional life, Dr. T's recent problems culminate on Dee
Dee's rain-soaked wedding day. Working again with screenwriter
Anne Rapp, Altman closes his sprawling comedy with an utterly
outrageous yet genuinely optimistic finale.

Around
the Fire (1998)
Drama
Teenage LSD dealer Simon (Devon Sawa) freaks out at a rock
concert and winds up in rehab. There, he reflects on his life and
butts heads with Kate (Charlayne Woodard), his drug counselor. In
flashbacks, his dope-smoking boarding school roommate (Eric Maibus)
takes him to his first "show" (the band is never
identified, but it's presumably The Grateful Dead) where he meets
Trace (Colman Domingo), HIV-positive hedonist Kevin (Henri Lubatti),
and lovely blonde stir-fry vendor Jennifer (Tara Reid). Under the
influence of pot and acid, Simon falls in love with the tie-dyed
lifestyle, the groovy music, and the people. Eventually,
unresolved issues send him into a downward spiral of drug abuse,
until finally, with Kate's help, he faces buried grief over his
dead mother and resentment towards his affluent, controlling
father (Bill Smitrovitch).
This colorful, good-hearted indie film benefits from groovy music,
an authentic recreation of the culture, and fine performances,
particularly from Domingo, Smitrovitch, and Woodard. Most
interesting of all is the film's non-judgmental frankness about
both the spiritually liberating and self-destructive aspects of
psychedelic drug use. John Jacobsen directed this movie from a
script by producers (and former Deadheads) John Comerford and
Tommy Rosen.

Berkeley beauties.
