The first chapter, 1961, tells the somber story of an aging woman (Vanessa Redgrave) who is left facing prejudice and intolerance after the death of her longtime companion. Unable to come to terms with her complex situation, she is forced to suffer alone, confused and distraught. The second installment, 1972, follows a young lesbian college student (Michelle Williams) who falls in love with a masculine woman (Chloe Sevigny). Unfortunately, her feminist friends refuse to accept their union, creating even more turmoil in the young woman’s life. The film concludes with 2000, which tells the story of a lesbian couple (Sharon Stone and Ellen DeGeneres) who are searching for the perfect sperm donor to start a family. The Muse (1999)

Comedy
2 hrs. 02 min.
One fine night, Hollywood screenwriter Steven Phillips basks in the honor of a humanitarian award, presented to him at a black-tie dinner as his proud wife Laura and daughters look on. One crappy morning later, a junior studio executive is telling Steven that he's lost his creative edge, and releases Steven from his contract. Steven's confidence is shaken: he wants to work, but how can he, if word is out that he's over? Desperately seeking counsel, Steven visits his friend, enviably successful screenwriter Jack Warrick, at Jack's Bel Air estate. Jack confides to Steven that he himself was inspired to his ongoing success. Not by a muse, but by a Muse. Steven is incredulous as Jack tells him of Sarah, one of the nine daughters (The Muses) of the god Zeus (of Greek mythology fame). Steven is soon consumed by the prospect of becoming one of Sarah's clients. As a favor, Jack agrees to set up a meeting between Sarah and Steven. The meeting, held in a guest house where Sarah is staying, gets off to a shaky start, but Sarah soon puts Steven at ease. In her capacity as Muse, Sarah explains, she does not do any actual work herself, but helps filmmakers get in touch with their own inner creativity. Sarah agrees to take Steven on as a client, but not before detailing her needs: food, lodging, car and driver, 24-hour access to Steven by phone, etc. Perks notwithstanding, Steven, impatient to get inspired, eagerly closes the deal. Closer to home, despite her misgivings, Laura accepts Sarah into the Phillips household. As Steven's wife and Muse become fast friends, he realizes that their lives and work will never be the same again.

In addition to Norman, there is Harry Adams (Samuel L. Jackson), a mathematician; Ted Fielding (Liev Schreiber), a physicist; and Beth Halperin (Sharon Stone), a biochemist and Norman’s old flame. Led by the secretive Barnes (Peter Coyote), the foursome undergoes a crash course in diving and living under the sea in a naval habitat and begins investigating the mysterious vessel, discovering a huge glowing sphere made of an unidentifiable substance with a shimmering, almost liquidlike surface. Last Dance (1996)

Drama
Director Bruce Beresford's LAST DANCE stars Sharon Stone as Cindy Liggett, a lower-class Southern woman who has spent the previous 12 years on death row for killing two of her teenaged classmates. Her legal appeals seem to have run their course, and the judge who is charged with reviewing her case has never pardoned a murderer. However, Rick Hayes (Rob Morrow), the lawyer appointed by the clemency board, begins to examine the records of her original trial and believes there's evidence for a stay of execution. The prospect of spending her remaining years in prison does not appeal to the disillusioned Cindy, though, and she's indifferent to Hayes and resigned to her death. Hayes, motivated both by a personal interest in Liggett, as well as a desire to prove himself to his contemptuous, politically connected brother (Peter Gallagher), refuses to accept her passivity and gradually persuades her to fight for her life.

Casino (1995)

Drama and Crime/Gangster
Martin Scorsese, one of America's most influential filmmakers, returns to the world of mobsters, greed, and excess that he explored so compellingly in 1990’s GOODFELLAS. Set in the 1970s and reveling in the minute details of how Las Vegas casinos operate, the film chronicles the rise and fall of casino manager Ace Rothstein (Robert De Niro). As the king of his domain, Ace efficiently runs the business and regularly sends lots of cold cash to his bosses. Helping him keep the casino's employees and customers honest is his best friend, Nicky (Joe Pesci), a violent sociopath. Although Ace aims to run a relatively respectable casino, the volatile Nicky wants to take over the entire gambling mecca, and when Ginger McKenna (Sharon Stone), a seasoned Vegas hustler, enters the picture, Ace and Nicky's friendship is complicated even further. As drugs and alcohol become a bigger part of Ginger's life, all three are eventually brought down by their own greed and blind ambition. CASINO shares many similarities with GOODFELLAS, beginning with a script that was cowritten by Scorsese and Nicholas Pileggi. Regulars De Niro and Pesci are first rate once again as the dissimilar companions, but it is Stone who steals the show with her grueling, intense performance.

Intersection (1994)

Drama
A remake of the French film LES CHOSES DE LA VIE, INTERSECTION places Vincent Eastman (Richard Gere), a successful architect, between his indifferent, beautiful, aristocratic wife, Sally (Sharon Stone), and his free-spirited lover, Olivia (Lolita Davidovich). Although it seems that Vincent has made a decision to leave Sally for Olivia, he remains emotionally torn, especially when he wonders how a divorce might affect his 12-year-old daughter, Meaghan (Jenny Morrison), with whom he is very close. If Vincent doesn't make a decision soon, he might find himself at a crossroads where he will be forced to make a choice and suffer the cataclysmic consequences. Using flashbacks and, in one climactic scene, beautifully eerie slow-motion camerawork, director Mark Rydell's INTERSECTION brings back the heartwrenching feeling and intricacies of old Hollywood melodramas.

The Quick and the Dead (1994)

Western
Sharon Stone stars as Ellen, a beautiful gunslinger with a cloudy past. She arrives in the town of Redemption with a bone to pick, namely with one John Herod (Gene Hackman, BONNIE AND CLYDE, THE ROYAL TENNENBAUMS), with whom she shares a shady history. Ellen signs up for the annual quick-draw contest, which awards $230,000 to the winner, but her real motivation is revenge. Raimi incorporates beautiful photography and camerawork, and surprising new twists to the familiar spaghetti Western tropes, breathing new life into the genre.

Last Action Hero (1993)

Science Fiction/Fantasy
Arnold Schwarzenegger and director John McTiernan join forces again in, THE LAST ACTION HERO, a heart racing thriller in which a young boy uses a magical ticket to infiltrate his favorite movie. Danny (Austin O’Brien) passes through the movie screen and into the whirlwind life of crusader Jack Slater (Arnold Schwarzenegger) becoming his sidekick. But when the villains learn that they too can travel back and forth between cinema and reality, it’s up to Jack Slater to put a stop their havoc wreaking.

Once a character in the "Jack Slater 4" film, Danny takes on the role of Slater’s sidekick, and together they combat Vivaldi (Anthony Quinn), Benedict (Charles Dance), and The Ripper (Tom Noonan), an infamous troika bent on global malice. Trouble really however, when Benedict gets a hold of Danny’s magic ticket, and travels to the real world laying waste to Times Square. Jack Slater leaves his cinematic bubble and follows the villain into reality--a reality where heroes don't always win.

Like a prophet armed with fire, director John McTiernan uses explosive action and booming special effects to foretell of a time when hyper reality will be achieved with the ease of buying a ticket to a movie.

Sliver (1993)

Drama
Carly Norris (Sharon Stone), a demure divorcיe and book editor, moves in to New York City’s tall, elegant Sliver building. Unbeknownst to Carly, though, fatal mysteries enshroud her new accommodations. However, someone is using a very sophisticated surveillance system to watch the intimate lives of these tenants--including Carly.

SLIVER is based on a novel by Ira Levin (ROSEMARY’S BABY), although the script shares striking similarities with writer Joe Eszterhas's earlier BASIC INSTINCT screenplay. Phillip Noyce directs efficiently, and Polly Walker is striking as a Londoner out of her element in the coke-addled world of upscale Manhattan.

Where Sleeping Dogs Lie (1993)

Drama
Bruce Simmons (Dylan McDermott), a double whammy failure in both writing and real estate, is booted out of his apartment and sets up camp in an unsold mansion which houses a secret to a family slaughter. Simmons' imagination begins to run wild, conflating the fantasy of the murder -- of re-enacting the murder in writing -- with reality. He is soon unable to discern the two worlds, as the two worlds themselves enmesh into psychoses and terror.

Basic Instinct (1992)

Drama
123 min.
This steamy thriller to end all steamy thrillers stars Michael Douglas as Nick, a boozy San Francisco police detective who finds himself drawn to the prime suspect in a murder case--manipulative, sexually uninhibited novelist Catherine Trammell (Sharon Stone). Catherine's latest book features a murder uncannily similar to the one Nick is investigating, and as the pair engage in a mating dance of dangerous one-upmanship, more murders occur, all described in her current work, about a boozy cop in love with a killer. Nick's psychiatrist (Jeanne Tripplehorn), and cop partner (George Dzundza) are both worried about him, and Catherine’s jealous lesbian lover (Leilani Sarelle) may be trying to kill him, but Nick is just too turned on to care.

Director Paul Verhoeven shows an admirable lack of restraint in this ludicrously enjoyable thriller, a sort of postmodern noir with Joe Eszterhas’s script coming off like Mamet by way of Penthouse. Stone and Douglas exhibit fine chemistry (and most of their bodies), and there's some lovely Bay Area scenery courtesy of cinematographer Jan de Bont (who went on to direct films such as SPEED and TWISTER). Wayne Knight (Newman from SEINFELD) and Mitch Pileggi (Skinner from THE X-FILES) are precinct heads who question Catherine in the infamous leg-crossing scene.

When their column is adapted into a television program, "He Said, She Said," their success leads to their romance--but when they have an on-air argument, both Dan and Lorie get a chance to explain their side of the story. Ken Kwapis directs the "He Said" portion of the argument, while Marisa Silver handles the "She Said" perspective.

Year of the Gun (1991)

Action/Adventure
Andrew McCarthy stars as freelance journalist David Raybourne in John Frankenheimer's adaptation of Michael Mewshaw's novel. The film is set in 1978 Rome, the time of the terroristic Red Brigade, and David is in the midst of writing a novel involving terrorist characters. He meets a number of journalists and photographers through his connection to the city's English-language newspaper, among them Lisa Spinelli (Valeria Golino), a journalist with inherited wealth, and Alison King (Sharon Stone), a well-known photographer. He falls in love with Lisa, slowly becoming aware that she may be involved with the terrorists. Seemingly by accident, his novel falls into the hands of the Red Brigade, and its plot, which revolves around the assassination of an Aldo Moro-like figure, bears an eerie similarity to the group's plans for the Italian prime minister. Since he has humorously named many of the characters after his local friends, his book may create problems for them. However, no one, least of all the Red Brigade, seems to believe his claims of ignorance and innocence. YEAR OF THE GUN is an interesting stab at a Hitchcockian wrong-man thriller, with Sharon Stone and Valeria Golino fun to watch as they chase around the beautifully photographed Rome locations.

At the invitation of a prominent critic, Bates travels to the Stardust Hotel in upstate New York in order to attend a retreat put together to honor his achievements as a filmmaker. What he encounters there is a circus-like atmosphere comprising cloyingly devoted fans, as grotesque as they are obsequious, all professing their unconditional love for Sandy while at the same time wondering aloud why "he don't make 'em like he used to." The crushed director finds a grim sort of solace in his affairs with three wildly different women. As the weekend ends, Bates finds himself bathed in the greasy light of self-recognition and haltingly discovers that he may be more repulsive than any of the adoring fans he so loathes.
