ancient coins. Kolko (Salma Hayek), a Private
Detective, is soon on his tail, but when she meets
Kresk the two fall helplessly in love, adding
further intrigue to the plot. Cameo appearances
come thick and fast throughout the film, with
Swedish director Traktor drawing on the many
talents of Jeff Goldblum, David Cross (MR. SHOW),
Elijah Wood, David Hyde Pierce (FRASIER), and Lara
Flynn Boyle (TWIN PEAKS). A little-known treat,
CHAIN OF FOOLS is a screwball comedy that easily
holds in own alongside the all-time greats of the
genre.

Hotel
(2003)
Comedy
2 hrs. 35 min. Like Time Code, this

bizarre maid service. The four stories ultimately
converge during the festivities of the Venice
Carnival.

Dafoe), a cartel kingpin with one last score to

Depp), a corrupt CIA agent, El Mariachi demands

wife is not healthy. Will the Colonel ever receive
his answer?
Frida
(2002)
Drama and
Romance
2 hrs. 03 min. This film tells the true story
of Mexican painter and 20th century icon Frida
Kahlo (Hayek), focusing on her often rocky
relationship with husband Diego Rivera (Molina),
and their place in Mexican society. Included in
the mix will be David Siqueiros (Banderas),
Rivera's rival in the Mexican art world, Tina
Modotti (Judd), a famed Italian photographer, and
Nelson Rockefeller (Norton), who famously
contracted Rivera to paint the lobby mural of
Rockefeller Center, only to renege because it
included a portrait of Lenin. Others in their
social circle included Russian leader and refugee
Leon Trotsky (Rush) (soon before Stalin had him
assassinated there), muralist Jean Charlot,
painter Pablo O'Higgins, composer Silvestre
Revueltas, and photographer Edward Weston. In
addition to being a great artist, Frida Kahlo was
also a bisexual and a communist, struggling with

leg, and finally, drug and alcohol abuse that
killed her at age 47.

borrowed the money.
No
One Writes to the Colonel (2000)
Art/Foreign
1 hr. 58 min. Every Friday for longer than the
locals can remember, the Colonel waits by the dock
for a letter announcing the arrival of the
government pension he has been promised year after
year. Too blinded by the shame of his poverty, he
waits in vain, solemnly believing that he will get
what he is due rather than tending to the hunger
that ravishes his family members.
Time
Code (2000)
Comedy and
Drama
1 hr. 37 min. Mike Figgis's intriguing
experiment, digitally photographed, is the first
feature film ever to be shot entirely in one take.
Four cameras were used to follow parallel stories,
which converge at the film's climax. Loosely, the
story concerns the casting of a feature film in an
earthquake-prone Los Angeles. Working from an
outline by Figgis, the assembled actors improvised
their lines in order to better adapt to potential
roadblocks. Rather than cut back and forth between
chosen cameras, Figgis has opted to leave all four
scenes running onscreen at the same time.

(2000)
Drama and
Crime/Gangster

personal, some are filled with intrigue and
danger. A Mexican policeman finds himself caught

agents work in the sordid and dangerous world of
San Diego dealers; a wealthy drug baron living in
upscale, suburban America is arrested and learns
how quickly his unknowing and pampered wife takes
over his business; and the U.S. President's new
anti-drug czar, an Ohio State Supreme Court
Justice, must deal with his increasingly
drug-addicted teenage daughter.

(1999)
Comedy
2 hrs. 10 min. The latest battle in the
eternal war between Good and Evil has come to New
Jersey in the late, late 20th Century. In what can
only be deemed a comedy parable, two renegade
fallen angels attempt to jerry-rig the entire
cosmological system -- unless a rag-tag group of
humans can stop faith. Bethany, the heroine of
DOGMA, is a woman who feels her prayers haven't
been answered when, out of nowhere, a heralding
angel appears in her bedroom and declares her the
potential savior of humanity. This abrupt meeting
sets her off on an extraordinary journey of
mystery, comedy and suspense as she is transported
to a fantastical world of celestial characters and
spirited adventure. Along the way she will meet up
with a heaven-sent messenger, an apostle with a
2,000 year old beef, a hotheaded demon, a heavenly
Muse and two unlikely Prophets known as Jay and
Silent Bob as they each discover the power of
their own individual faith.

Mary Carmen (Salma Hayek), a free-spirited woman
and Valentino's ever-present girlfriend.
Wild
Wild West (1999)
Action/Adventure
and Science Fiction/Fantasy Barry Sonnenfeld is reunited with his MEN IN
BLACK star Will Smith in this gadget-soaked romp
based (loosely) on the 1960s television show. WILD
WILD WEST supplies many impressive visuals (thanks
to brilliant production designer Bo Welch) and
some hearty laughs. Will Smith is James West, a
Civil War hero and U.S. marshal inclined to shoot
first and ask questions later. His partner is the
wacky inventor and pseudointellectual Artemus
Gordon (Kevin Kline). The team is created when the
world’s leading scientists are kidnapped by a
diabolical madman named Dr. Arliss Loveless
(Kenneth Branagh), and President Ulysses S. Grant
(also played by Kevin Kline) wants his two best
men on the job. Loveless’s machines have the
creepy fun feeling of EDWARD SCISSORHANDS (Welch
again)--many of them have a spider motif--and
Artemus Gordon rivals him with his own fun
inventions. An odd but enjoyable blend of science
fiction and old-school Western, WILD WILD WEST is
packed with cool images and slick action
sequences.

Buscemi (RESERVOIR DOGS).
