Gayheart was raised in Pinetop, Kentucky by parents of Irish, Italian, German and Cherokee Indian heritage.
Her father was a coal miner. She moved to New York City at 15 where she completed her education at New York's Professional Children's School and the Lee Strasberg Institute.
Formerly engaged to director Brett Ratner.
She first met former fiancee Brett Ratner when they lived near each other in Manhattan, where both were desperate for their big break. Becoming friends, Ratner cast her in his first movie, a short film entitled Whatever Happened to Mason Reese. The movie put both Brett and Rebecca on the map for success.
She and actor Eric Dane were married on October 29, 2004.

Gayheart's break into the industry was a series of television commercials for Noxzema in the early 1990s, earning her the moniker "The Noxzema Girl.". The commercials began airing in 1991, and brought her recognition.
She took on the Julia Roberts role in the 2005 Broadway production of Steel Magnolias. She also appeared in a 1998 production of The Last Night of the Ballyhoo as Sunny.
Growing up, she lived in a house built on top of an Indian burial ground.

She left the Showtime series Dead Like Me after only five episodes. Her last apperance is in the episode Reaping Havoc.
On 13 June 2001, Gayheart struck 9-year-old Jorge Cruz Jr. as he
jaywalked across the street. According to the police report, the boy was
walking home from school, and crossed the street about 160 feet from the
nearest crosswalk.
While several cars stopped to let him go, Gayheart allegedly swerved
around the traffic and into a two-way left-turn lane, striking the boy;
he died the next day at Los Angeles Children's Hospital. His parents,
Jorge Cruz and Silvia Martinez, filed a wrongful-death lawsuit on 6
August 2001 against her. Gayheart paid for Cruz's hospital and funeral
expenses.
She was originally cast as Inara in Joss Whedon's Firefly but was recast just days before filming began, because "it wasn't working."
She appeared in a short film called Lady Luck in 1990.
In 1992, Gayheart landed her first major role when she joined the cast of the soap opera Loving as Hannah Mayberry.
Pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter charge. She
was sentenced to three years' probation, a one-year suspension of her
license, a $2,800 fine and 750 hours of community service. She was also
ordered to make a public-service announcement.
In 2001, she was one of the rumored candidates to replace Shannen Doherty on the supernatural drama series Charmed.
In 1993 and 1994, Gayheart had a recurring role in the Vanishing Son action pack series.
Gayheart plead no contest to misdemeanor charges that stemmed from a 2001 incident where the vehicle she was driving killed a 9 year old boy. She was charged with (and plead guilty to) involuntary vehicular manslaughter.

role of Lois in Scream 2 (1997).
