Life Story
At 5'9, blonde and blue eyed, Peta Wilson
stands above most at first glance. But don't let the striking looks of
this 35-year-old, two time Gemini Nominee blind you. Talented and with a
spirit of "don't stop me now", Peta has gained world wide
notice which has shot her to a level of fame in the last 4 years that
most actors dream about.
Although she was born in Sydney, Australia (on November 18, 1970), Peta spent her childhood years in Papua New Guinea. The roots she put down there are still very much a part of her today. Without television or radio, Peta and her brother Rob had to entertain themselves, often putting on musical shows using their parents' "8 track tapes and lip-syncing to Liza Minnelli and Neil Diamond." Darcy Wilson, Peta's father, was in the Special Services, a branch of the military, so the family moved often during Peta's childhood and teen years. As an "army brat", Peta quickly learned how to "fit in" with many different types of people and in many different situations. Changing schools every six months, Peta learned to adapt her personality to be accepted in each new location and to make new friends.
As she grew up, Peta involved herself in sports such as netball and swimming. "I love sports. It kept me out of trouble. It gave me energy and sports was the place to put it", says Peta. Carlyne White, Peta's mother, decided she wanted a bit more feminine daughter, so she sent Peta to deportment classes. There Peta learned to walk a catwalk like a pro, and was quickly spotted by a modeling agent. Peta spent the next few years traveling in Europe, earning her living as a model and growing into an adult with dreams and ambitions of her own. Acting on those dreams, Peta moved to the US in 1991 to study theater. She studied with people like Arthur Mendoza from The Actors Circle Theater in Los Angeles, Tom Waits at TomCats Repertory Group, Sylvana Gulado and Stuart Rodgers. She landed small roles in independent films like "LOSER", award winning film "One of Our Own" and the made-for-HBO series "Strangers" which launched her television career. By 1996, Peta was ready to move on. She wanted to move to New York to continue her work and study in theater. But before she could leave Los Angeles, her agent persuaded her to try a television audition for La Femme Nikita, a new series from the USA Network based on Luc Besson's French film of the same name. With no expectations, not even sure that she wanted the lead of a TV series, Peta walked into the auditions and proceeded to beat out more than 200 other actresses up for the part.
La Femme Nikita has been a successful springboard for Peta's career. She has earned 2 Gemini nominations for "Best Performance by an Actress in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role" for her performance on the weekly series. Peta has since gone on to star in such films as "Mercy" starring Ellen Barkin and Showtimes Original "A Girl Thing" starring Stockard Channing. In 2002 Peta appeared in the new STARZ! movie "Joe and Max". In July 2003, the release of the 20th
Century Fox film "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen launched Peta's
big screen introduction along side Sean Connery. In 2004 Peta landed the
lead role in "False Pretenses", a Movie of the Week for
Lifetime Television. In 2005, Peta will be seen in a re-occuring role on
the new FOX series "Jonny Zero". Coming in 2006, Peta can be
seen in the new film "Superman Returns" which is filming now
in Australia. |
