Graduations in nunchaku are divided into
kyu's en dan’s (degrees). Up to the brown belt one refers to kyu. From
the black belt and up one refers to a dan.

Brown

Black

Unlike in most martial arts, in nunchaku-do
one does not get belts for the different graduations, but patches. These
patches are attached to the belts. A beginner in nunchaku-do starts off
having an empty belt, compared with a white belt.
A belt for kumite matches and a belt
for dan graduations
Up until the brown belt patches are
attached to the belt. This particular Velcro belt is yellow on one side
and black on the other. During a Kumite match one participant carries
the yellow side up, and the opponent the black side. In this way both
competitors are easily recognizable for both jury and fans.
Up until the brown belt the different graduations are examined at the
martial art school. Carrying a black belt means being a master in this
sport. Therefore a graduate for the black belt will be examined before a
special commission. If the candidate successfully passes the exam for a
1st dan, he or she will receive a new black belt containing a yellow
patch. If a candidate passes the exam for a 2nd dan, a second yellow
patch may be attached alongside it, a third one for the 3rd dan, etc.
