Freestyle is a discipline where entertainment is the major motive. The participant shows a free exercise accompanied by music in a short amount of time. A jury judges the participant on aspects such as speed, variety, movement and showmanship. Creativity plays a very important role in this discipline, because the practitioner can create and direct his own exercise.

Competition organization

There are no particular classes in freestyle. Everybody can enter, notwithstanding gender, age, height or graduation level. The participants must be able to show their valid WNA-passport before the beginning of the tournament. The participants are also responsible for handing over their music, on CD or MD. A tape or CD should be ready to play before a freestyle can begin. The participant is at all times solely responsible for the quality of the music.

Requirements for a freestyle:

  1. The freestyle must last between 90 and 180 seconds
  2. The freestyle must be in accordance with the spirit of the accompanying music
  3. There should be variation in forward, side wards and backwards movements
  4. The freestyle must consists of basic strikes, fragments, basic freestyle forms and self designed techniques
  5. The harmony is an important factor, which strongly influences the movement and performance of the freestyle. Temporally halts that disturb the harmony of the freestyle should be avoided. A concentration stop for 2 seconds before a risk element is allowed
  6. Official WNA nunchaku gear is compulsory

Judging a freestyle

Three or four jury members judge a freestyle. All jury members should have an official jury license. The jury members judge independent of each other. They note their grades on a jury form and hand it over to the head jury member. The head jury member will calculate the final grades. When judging a freestyle, the grade is based on the maximum score of 10 points. Points are subtracted from this maximum score when judging the freestyle.

The freestyle is judged on the following items, amongst others:

  • Pace and rhythm of the nunchaku during the entire freestyle
  • Constant of speed when performing the techniques
  • Variation in techniques
  • Control and movement
