Anywhere But
Here (1999)
Drama
Director Wayne Wang, known for family dramas
about Chinese Americans that focus on
mother-daughter relationships (DIM SUM, THE JOY LUCK
CLUB), here adapts Mona Simpson’s ANYWHERE BUT
HERE, a novel perfectly suited for his talents.
Teenage Ann (Natalie Portman) wants a normal life,
but her mother, Adele (Susan Sarandon), has a
different idea of what is considered normal. When
Adele grows tired of claustrophobic small-town life
in Wisconsin, she takes the constantly complaining
Ann across the country to Los Angeles, where she
wants to start a new life. Ann, however, doesn’t
want to go, and her behavior wavers between typical
adolescent annoyance to real insightfulness into her
mother’s character. Much of this comes from the
voice-over provided by the adult Ann, who explains
it all from her mature point of view. This
sentimental story, long on feelings and more
feelings, is nicely played, with Sarandon
enthusiastic as the eccentric single mother that her
daughter can’t wait to get away from.

Star Wars:
Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
Drama
and Science Fiction/Fantasy
2 hrs. 11 min. The
first of three prequels to George Lucas’s
celebrated STAR WARS films, EPISODE I - THE PHANTOM
MENACE is set some 30 years before STAR WARS:
EPISODE IV - A NEW HOPE in the era of the Republic.
Naboo, a peaceful planet governed by the young, but
wise Queen Amidala (Natalie Portman), is being
threatened by the corrupt Trade Federation, puppets
of an evil Sith lord and his terrifying apprentice,
Darth Maul (Ray Park). The seemingly benevolent
Senator Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) is chief adviser
to the queen, though there are suspicions
surrounding him. Jedi knights Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam
Neeson) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor,
performing an amazing vocal interpretation of Alec
Guinness, the older Obi-Wan) are called on to
intervene in the trade disputes. Along the way, they
acquire an apprentice of their own in the form of
young prodigal Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd), or as
STAR WARS fans know him, the future Darth Vader.
They also encounter Jar Jar Binks (Ahmed Best), a
goofy, lizardlike creature who has been banished
from his underwater world for his clumsiness. When
the Trade Federation launches an attack on Naboo,
the queen and her allies must battle hordes of robot
troopers while Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan face off against
the sinister Darth Maul.
One of the most anticipated
films of all time, THE PHANTOM MENACE sets the stage
for the tumultuous events to come. Lucas fills the
screen with detailed sci-fi creatures and locations,
revealing the most creative and exquisite sets,
costumes, character designs to hit the screen since
the original trilogy.

Everyone Says
I Love You (1996)
Comedy
1 hr. 37 min. Woody Allen's 26th film is a
celebration of an eccentric and very extended family
living on New York's upper east side, exploring a
broad spectrum of romantic entanglements as they
fall in and out of love. Allen creates a world in
which Yves St. Laurent mannequins come to life in
store windows and dance, in which hospital orderlies
and nurses join their patients in a musical
sequence, and in which ghosts and jewelry
salespeople alike participate in intricately staged
production numbers.

Mars Attacks!
(1996)
Comedy
Director Tim Burton unleashes MARS ATTACKS!, a
vicious, affectionate, brightly-colored homage to
1950s alien invasion movies. When a shiny silver
flying saucer lands in the Nevada desert, a group of
skull-faced Martians exit the gleaming craft.
Although they claim to be peaceful, they promptly
"vaporize" a gathering of unfortunate
Earthlings, kicking off a bizarre high-tech war with
wild special effects. This studiously campy sci-fi
spoof, based on a series of Topps bubble-gum cards,
gleefully parodies not only schlock B-horror movies,
but also overblown blockbusters such as INDEPENDENCE
DAY. This subversive film is helped along by an
all-star cast including Jack Nicholson in dual roles
as both a clueless U.S. President (with First Lady
Glenn Close) and a Las Vegas sleazebag. The film
follows the wacky WAR OF THE WORLDS-like proceedings
from the points of view of numerous colorful
characters, from the inane U.S. Press Secretary
(Martin Short) to a trailer-park family (Lukas Haas
and Sylvia Sidney), to singer Tom Jones (as
himself).

McCauley will stop at nothing to do what he does
best and neither will Hanna, even though it means
destroying everything around them, including the
people they love. With a solid supporting cast that

Natalie Portman, HEAT is a truly epic crime story.

out by some crooked DEA agents. The girl pleads with
Leon to teach her how to be a "cleaner"
and avenge her little brother's death. However, once
