Seven (1995)
Drama and
Thriller
127 min.
Gluttony, greed, sloth, envy, wrath, pride,
and lust--these are the seven deadly sins that
are being punished with unimaginable cruelty and
calculation by an enigmatic killer in David
Fincher's bleak thriller SEVEN. Set in a
perpetually gloomy unnamed city, the film
follows Somerset (Morgan Freeman), a retiring
police detective, as he experiences his final
week on the job, reluctantly working with
assertive newcomer Mills (Brad Pitt). When an
obese man is found brutally murdered in his
home, the seasoned Somerset realizes this is no
ordinary killing--someone tortured him because
of his appetite. Slayings that reflect the sins
of greed and sloth soon follow, leading Somerset
and Mills on a desperate search to find the
mysterious John Doe, who is responsible for
these methodical murders. As the case builds to
a startling conclusion, both Somerset and Mills
become more involved than they ever could have
imagined.
After a brief opening scene, SEVEN immediately
cuts to a highly stylized title sequence. An
intricate collage of books and photos, scissors
and razors, and blood and skin eerily captures
the dark, graphic tone of Fincher's intriguing
mystery. The film cleverly avoids depicting most
acts of violence onscreen, focusing instead on
the cryptic remains of the crimes, allowing
viewers to investigate along with the
detectives. An example of nearly flawless
filmmaking, the movie features a meticulously
crafted screenplay, brilliant photography and
design, sure-handed direction, and excellent
performances from the entire cast. All of these
elements combine to amazing effect in the film's
unforgettably stunning finale.

knows that he didn't commit the crimes. Sent to
Shawshank Prison to do hard time, Andy--a
taciturn banker in the outside world--has to
learn to get by in the brutal, cutthroat
confines of prison life. His quiet strength
slowly earns the respect of his fellow
inmates--most notably, Red (Morgan Freeman)--and
even much of the prison staff. But Andy's
seemingly stoic acceptance of his unjust
imprisonment hides a fierce determination for
freedom. This beautifully crafted movie features
touching and sincere performances from the
entire cast, with an uplifting message about
humanity's indomitable spirit and the redemptive
value of hope. Based on the novella RITA

The Bonfire of the
Vanities (1990)
Drama
Brian De Palma (SCARFACE) directed this
lavish adaptation of Tom Wolfe's best-selling
satirical novel, featuring Tom Hanks, Melanie
Griffith, and Bruce Willis. Hanks stars as
Sherman McCoy, a distinctly 1980s brand of
wealthy Wall Street wizard who takes a mighty
fall from his glitzy lifestyle after he and his
mistress (Griffith) put a Bronx youth into a
coma via a hit-and-run accident. Alcoholic
reporter Peter Fallow (Willis) sees the crime as
an opportunity for big headlines, and soon
Sherman is the target of every political and
media group in the city, including an Al
Sharpton-style black leader named Rev. Bacon
(John Hancock) and a sleazy D.A. (F. Murray
Abraham). SEX IN THE CITY babe Kim Catrall
costars as Sherman's long-suffering wife, and
Morgan Freeman is the judge who tries to reign
in this three-ring media circus of a case. Like
the decade it parodies, this film is proudly
over the top in its lavishness. It's also filled
to overflowing with inspired casting, wildly
inventive comedy, and the sort of artistically
ambitious tracking shots for which its director
is renowned.

Driving Miss Daisy (1989)
Drama
Director Bruce Beresford's affinity for the
subtleties of southern life is apparent in this
adaptation of Alfred Uhry's Pulitzer
Prize-winning play. Starring Jessica Tandy as
Daisy Werthan and Morgan Freeman as Hoke
Colburn, the film opens in late-1940s Atlanta.
Since Miss Daisy is becoming a menace behind the
wheel, her son, Boolie (Dan Aykroyd), ignores
her protests and hires Hoke, a black chauffeur.
When the feisty matron decides to resist
necessity and walk to the store, the equally
stubborn chauffeur follows her in her car. As he
says to Boolie, "I used to rassle hogs down
to the ground...ain't nary a hog got away from
me yet." But Hoke's methods are gentleness
and patience, and as the years elapse in his
ongoing tug-of-war with the temperamental Daisy,
she begins to tacitly acknowledge his wisdom.
When she expresses annoyance over the demands of
the nascent civil rights movement, Hoke points
out to the Jewish woman the similarity between
the attack on her synagogue and Klan attacks on
black churches. But it is only after many years
together that they can finally admit to the
depth of the friendship they have shared. The
two stars give unforgettable performances, and
Beresford's direction is a model of restraint.

Glory (1989)
Action/Adventure
GLORY recounts the bravery of a group of
Civil War soldiers often overlooked by
history--the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts, a
troop of free black men who fought to help win
liberty for their enslaved brothers. Based on
the historical novels ONE GALLANT RUSH by Peter
Burchand and LAY THIS LAUREL by Lincoln Kirstein
and the letters of Robert Gould Shaw, the film
follows the youthful Colonel Shaw (Matthew
Broderick) as he takes responsibility for
readying these soldiers for battle. Shaw, a
privileged young Boston Brahman, finds the job
harder than expected because many of the men
balk at taking orders from him. Private Trip (Denzel
Washington) is especially resistant to Shaw's
leadership, but over time the two come to an
understanding as they endure the hardships of
the war. On July 18, 1863, Shaw volunteers the
54th for the honor of leading the charge against
Ft. Wagner, a mission that means almost certain
death, with Trip carrying the regiment's colors
into battle. This gritty and realistic vision of
the horrors of war is a moving and critical
examination of a lost piece of history.
Beautifully shot and triumphantly acted (by a
cast that also includes Morgan Freeman, Cary
Elwes, and Andre Braugher), director Edward
Zwick's film serves as a tribute to the courage
and selfless bravery of the black soldiers of
the Civil War.

Lean on Me (1989)
Drama
Based on actual events, director John G.
Avildsen's LEAN ON ME tells the story of Joe
Clark (Morgan Freeman), a tough and radical
disciplinarian hired to save the worst school in
Paterson, New Jersey. Eastside High School is in
trouble--the once exemplary school is now
failing miserably. Graffitti lines the halls,
gangs and drugs rule the school, and teachers
and students live in perpetual fear. In one
school year, Clark is challenged to turn the
snake pit of a school into a halfway civilized
place of learning, populated by decent students.
To make sure his students pass a basic
proficiency exam, Clark resorts to what some
believe to be questionable methods--including
wandering the halls threateningly with a
baseball bat--to restore order to his school.
Clark's extreme tactics also include firing
teachers for talking back, forcing students to
sing the school song on demand, and locking out
students known to be drug dealers. Freeman
delivers an astonishing performance as the
tough-as-nails principal who became a national
hero and symbol for tough-love education.

Street Smart (1987)
Drama
Jerry Schatzberg’s STREET SMART is a
multi-layered story dealing with the politics of
city life--on the streets, and in the office.
Caught unprepared with a deadline he can't miss,
moral-free Manhattan journalist Jonathan Fisher
(Christopher Reeve) completely fabricates an
article about "Tyrone," a successful
pimp. The story becomes a sensation, and
Jonathan is turned into a media star. But
Jonathan's mendacity comes back to haunt him
when a shrewd, vicious pimp named Fast Black
(Morgan Freeman) wants to meet him, for
"Tyrone's” tale resembles his own life a
little too closely. Causing even greater trouble
is the D.A.'s office, who wants to see
Jonathan's notes (which don't exist), for
evidence that could convict Fast Black of
murder. As a result, Jonathan finds himself
caught in a vicious cycle of lies that could
easily end his career--and maybe his life.
As the film gains momentum, it splits into two
stories: first, Reeve’s transition into a
highly popular television reporter; and second,
Fast Black’s relationship with Punchy (Kathy
Baker), a veteran hooker who hasn’t become
completely hardened. These heated street scenes
provide STREET SMART with its greatest energy,
which is due in large part to the electrifying
performances of Baker and Freeman (who was
nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar).
