Started off her career as the lead singer of Sista, who pinned their only hit Brand Nu (1994). The group was founded by then mentor 'Devante DeGrate' of the R&B group Jodeci. The group parted ways shortly after.

Was also a part of DeVante DeGrate production teams along with Timbaland (Tim Mosley) and R&B crooner Ginuwine.

Owns a mansion in Virgina Beach, Virginia.

Wrote, produced and performed on "I Want You Back", the début solo single of Spice Girl Melanie Brown. Released in 1998, the song went straight in at Number 1 in the UK charts.

Is a huge fan of Björk.

Her 2002 album Under Construction is her best selling album to date; selling 2.1 million copies in the USA.

"Work It" spent ten consecutive weeks at number two on the Hot 100. The song is tied with Foreigner's 1981 hit "Waiting For a Girl Like You" as the longest-running number two single that did not reach number one. 

Rented Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)'s "Pussy Wagon" from Quentin Tarantino for use in the music video for her song "I'm Really Hot".

Her fifth album This Is Not a Test! was released in Nov of 2003 and debuted at No. 13 in The Billboard 200 Chart selling 144,000 copies in its first week of release; the album has only sold 690,000 to date in the USA.

References friend Eva Pigford, winner of "America's Next Top Model" (2003), in her song "On & On" from the album "The Cookbook," in the line, "Top Model diva, but my name not Eva."

In Jul of 2005 she released her sixth album The Cookbook which came in at No. 2 on The Billboard 200 Chart selling 176,000 copies in the first week of release.

The first single of The Cookbook, "Lose Control" features Ciara and Fat Man Scoop and has peaked at No. 3 on The Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
