A Scanner Darkly (2006)
"A Scanner
Darkly" is set in suburban Orange County, California in the
future. It imagines a paranoid world in which it seems two of
every 10 Americans has been hired by the government to spy on the
other 8 -- in the name of national security and drug enforcement.
When one reluctant government recruit (Reeves) is ordered to start
spying on his friends, he is launched on a journey into the
absurd, where outsourced government contractors largely define the
social construct, where identities and loyalties are impossible to
decode, and where not even his girlfriend can be trusted. The film
highlights the inconsistencies and ironic consequences of the war
on drugs.

The
Replacements (2000)
Comedy
and Drama
Inspired by the too-ludicrous-to-be-believed
National Football League strike of 1987, Howard
Deutch's THE REPLACEMENTS follows a team of scab
players as they fill in for the real pros. Jimmy
McGinty (Gene Hackman), a compassionate and
dedicated coach, is rehired by the owner of the
Washington Sentinels to pull together a new crew in
order to finish off the season and keep the stadium
filled. This includes a safety who is on work
release, a lightning-quick wide receiver with bricks
for hands, a deranged linebacker-SWAT team member, a
chain-smoking Welsh kicker, and Shane Falco (Keanu
Reeves), a former college quarterback who lost his
chance at the big time after a disastrous Sugar Bowl
appearance. The newly formed squad must learn to set
aside its differences if it is to win three out of
four games and make it to the playoffs. Along the
way, Falco finds himself harassed by the
Sentinels’ star quarterback, Eddie Martel, as well
as falling in love with the team's head cheerleader,
Annabelle (Brooke Langton). A final showdown against
the strike-breaking reigning champions gives McGinty
and Falco one last chance at redemption. Deutch's
lighthearted comedy is greatly aided by Hackman and
Reeves’s surprisingly sincere performances.

The
Watcher (2000)
Thriller
A stylish thriller that recalls David Fincher's
SEVEN, THE WATCHER is set in the urban landscape of
modern Chicago. The story follows Los Angeles
transplant Joel Campbell (James Spader), an
ex-police detective who has relocated to Chicago in
order to escape his past. It appears that a
dangerous serial killer, David Allen Griffin (Keanu
Reeves), has formed a special emotional attachment
to Campbell, luring him to Chicago in order to
continue their deadly game of cat-and-mouse. Each
game commences when Griffin sends Campbell a picture
of a young girl, giving Campbell 24 hours to track
her down before she's murdered. After three tragic
failures, the stakes are upped when Griffin kidnaps
Campbell's beautiful psychiatrist, Polly (Marisa
Tomei), mimicking an earlier event that drove
Campbell to Chicago in the first place.
THE WATCHER is a commentary on modern society's
effect on people: making them crudely unable to
notice the peripheral people in their daily lives.
First-time director Joe Charbanic shoots his film
like a music video, using elliptical editing, slow
motion, and a postindustrial soundtrack that greatly
reflects the Chicago music scene. As the tortured
detective, Spader possesses an internal fire that
gradually builds in intensity as the film
progresses.

Devil's
Advocate (1997)
Drama
2 hrs. 10 min. Promising young lawyer Kevin
Lomax (Keanu Reeves) has never lost a case--even
when his client is guilty. When Kevin is seduced
away from his sleepy hometown in Florida to work for
a flashy, charming lawyer (Al Pacino, in a role he
seems born to play), his mother (Judith Ivey) has
reservations. But as he works his way up the
corporate ladder, Kevin manages to put them aside,
along with his wife's (Charlize Theron) needs and
the stirrings of his conscience over knowingly
defending the guilty. However, his vanity won't let
him start losing now. As Kevin's career skyrockets,
his neglected wife Mary Ann begins to see evil,
violent visions. Hoping a visit from his mother will
help, instead Kevin finds himself confronted with a
secret his mother has never told him. As Mary Ann
seemingly descends into madness, Kevin begins to
suspect his boss may be much more than he seems, and
he finds himself faced with a choice between saving
his own life and saving his soul. Thought-provoking,
inventive, and entertaining, director Taylor
Hackford's film is reminiscent of psychological
horror films like ROSEMARY'S BABY. Andrzej
Bartkowiak's lush, innovative cinematography
complements the smart script and dead-on acting.

Much
Ado About Nothing (1993)
Comedy
When gallant Don Pedro (Denzel Washington), his
nefarious brother Don John (Keanu Reeves), and close
confidantes Claudio (Robert Sean Leonard) and
Benedick (Kenneth Branagh) ride thunderously into
the Sicilian village of Messina, romance, gaiety,
and suspicion abound. The men have returned safely
from a war, and soon everyone in the sun-drenched
villa is abuzz with thoughts of love. Claudio,
enamored of the purity of the nubile Hero (Kate
Beckinsale), entreats Don Pedro to woo the maiden on
his behalf that evening at a masked ball. Once he's
managed the successful betrothal of Hero to Claudio,
Don Pedro has another plot in mind: he plans to
trick Hero's bantering cousin Beatrice (Emma
Thompson) and sworn bachelor Benedick into
acknowledging they've fallen in love. Meanwhile, the
villainous Don John, driven by contempt for his
compatriots, has hatched a plot of his own: to fool
Claudio and Don Pedro into believing Hero is
unchaste. The plot works perfectly: sensitive but
volatile Claudio denounces her publicly on their
wedding day. All seems lost, and soon the attempts
to set things right include a formal duel, a
scheming friar, a mock memorial and a gaggle of
bumbling constables. With its excellent cast and
beautiful Tuscan backdrop, director Kenneth
Branagh's film is a light-hearted adaptation of yet
another of Shakespeare's great plays.

Bram
Stoker's Dracula (1992)
Suspense/Horror
A seductive retelling of the legendary tale,
BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA is Francis Ford Coppola's
opulent, erotic, blood-filled feast. Count Dracula
(played with irresistible intensity by Gary Oldman)
reunites with his soul mate, Mina (Winona Ryder),
after four centuries. Mina's friend Lucy (Sadie
Frost) succumbs to the deadly bite of Dracula while
Renfield (Tom Waits), locked in an asylum, eagerly
waits for his master's return. Mina's fiancי,
Jonathan Harker (Keanu Reeves), with the help of the
eccentric Professor Van Helsing (Anthony Hopkins),
attempts to save Mina's life and soul before she can
become Dracula's eternal bride.
After Dracula attacks Mina’s friend Lucy (Sadie
Frost), Dr. Jack Seward (Richard E. Grant) calls in
the legendary Professor Van Helsing (Anthony
Hopkins) to cure Lucy’s "disease of the
blood." Jonathan escapes from the castle and he
and Mina are married while Lucy dies and is
resurrected as a vampire. When Dracula appears to
Mina in her sleep, she declares her undying love for
him. Professor Van Helsing, Jack Seward, and
Lucy’s fiancי, Arthur Holmwood (Cary Elwes),
join Jonathan and travel to Transylvania to destroy
Dracula, but Mina tries to save her tortured lover.
Musician Tom Waits appears in the film as Renfield,
a Victorian lunatic singing the praises of Dracula.
Ornate costume design and lighting awash in shades
of blood make this film a seductive and scary
must-see.
In his version of the oft-told tale, Francis Ford
Coppola takes Bram Stoker's archetypical horror
story and accentuates the romantic angle. Blood
still flows in large amounts, and Coppola opted to
do all the eye-pleasing visual effects in-camera,
utilizing shadow puppets, smoke, miniatures, and
other time-honored tricks of the trade--creating a
visual style not unlike that of a storybook come to
life.

cash, and never leave behind clues, Utah's only lead
comes from his partner, Pappas (Gary Busey). Pappas
believes that the Ex-Presidents are a surfer gang,
lead by charismatic adrenalin junkie Bodhi. Posing
as a surfer himself, Utah slowly becomes a member of
Bodhi's gang, enticed by his energy and craziness.
As Utah's investigation goes deeper, with dazzling
extreme sports hijinks that involve night surfing,
sky diving, and well-executed bank robberies that
serve as the glue between his world and Bodhi's,
Utah must ultimately choose between duty and
friendship. Director Kathryn Bigelow presents a
well-sculpted masterpiece with this action-lover's

River's
Edge (1986)
1
hr. 39 min. Based on a real life incident, this
disturbing drama serves as a seminal study of
disillusioned and alienated youth. Set in a small
rural town, the local clique of slacker teens is
pulled apart when Samson (Daniel Roebuck) kills his
girlfriend on the banks of the river and then
callously shows off the dead body to his friends.
The teens are so numb and ambivalent to the reality
of their situation that they remain relatively
unphased by the murder of one of their own. Crispin
Glover is brilliant as the drugged out paranoid,
Layne, who sympathizes with the killer, and plots to
hide him at the house of an eccentric recluse
(Dennis Hopper), who is rumored to have comitted a
similar crime in the 1960s. Keanu Reeves and Ione
Skye co-star as Matt and Clarissa, two friends who
are drawn together in their realization that
something is horribly wrong. In this startling
portrait of a morally void society, director Tim
Hunter creates a remarkable world of dysfunction and
dead-end lives that is haunting in its accuracy.
