Michael
Collins (1996)
Drama
Starting with Ireland's bloody Easter Rebellion of
1916 and ending with his untimely death, this brilliantly
photographed epic from director Neil Jordan tells the
charged story of Michael "Mickey" Collins. An
IRA founder whose innovative guerrilla tactics succeeded
in bringing freedom from British rule, Collins remains a
controversial but much respected political figure, who is
skillfully embodied in the film by Liam Neeson. Aidan
Quinn plays his longtime friend Harry, and Julia Roberts,
sporting a nice brogue and lovely period costumes, is
Katie, the woman they both love.
Jordan staged most of the battles, riots, ceremonies, and
speeches at their actual locations in Ireland with a cast
of thousands and a great eye for period detail. The result
is a film that is both historically evocative and
stunningly beautiful thanks to the breathtaking
cinematography of Chris Menges. The film is also
surprisingly nonjudgmental in its depiction of Collins's
appalling but inarguably successful methods of
"bloody mayhem." Stephen Rea and Alan Rickman
costar, with Elliot Goldenthal contributing a rich
Oscar-nominated score.

Something
to Talk About (1995)
Drama
Lasse Hallstrom (THE CIDER HOUSE RULES, MY LIFE AS A
DOG) directs this romantic comedy in which Julia Roberts
plays Grace, a decent but naive southern woman who,
happening to drive by her husband, Eddie (Dennis Quaid),
one afternoon, is shocked to discover him locked in a
passionate embrace, in public, with another woman. She
immediately confronts her errant hubby, setting the town
gossips' tongues wagging, and moves back in with her
wealthy parents, provoking reactions from her imperious
dad (Robert Duvall), who believes that a wife's duty is to
stand by her man, and her sarcastic sister, Emma Rae (Kyra
Sedgwick), who thinks that the bum got what he deserved.
Soon Grace has caused a town scandal by openly questioning
anyone who may have had an affair with Eddie and also
starts to unearth problems in her parents' relationship.
The film is ultimately a story about women who attempt
reconciliation with their cheating spouses by exploring a
new set of rules on their own terms. The screenplay is by
Callie Khouri, the Academy Award- winning screenwriter of
THELMA AND LOUISE.

Ready
to Wear (1994)
Comedy
Robert Altman delivers another sprawling satire with
READY TO WEAR, this time focusing his lens on the tightly
knit, pretentious fashion industry. After a popular
fashion leader dies during the most important industry
gathering of the year in Paris, the question that it might
have been murder creates chaos amongst the gathered
participants and viewers. Affected parties include his
widow, who uses this opportunity to rekindle an old
relationship; the dead man's mistress, a designer who is
forced to sell out to a Texas boot tycoon; three magazine
editors, who all have their eyes on the same photographer;
two American reporters whose affair keeps them in bed
throughout the gathering; and two aging Roman lovers who
are reuniting after many years. The film’s many
revolving characters and stories collide at the climax, an
all-nude fashion show that stuns and excites the crowd.
Altman’s comedy boasts one of his most star-studded
casts, and actors who are playing fictional characters
intermingle with popular designers and models who play
themselves. This fresh mixing of fiction and reality
recalls the director’s thrilling THE PLAYER, and the
multi-layered story, the masterful NASHVILLE. Standout
performances include the late Marcello Mastroianni, Sophia
Loren, Tim Robbins, Julia Roberts, Tracey Ullman, and a
hysterical Kim Basinger.

The
Pelican Brief (1993)
Drama
Julia Roberts (ERIN BROCKOVICH) stars in THE PELICAN
BRIEF as sharp law student Darby Shaw whose querying mind
gets her into trouble. A faithful adaptation of John
Grisham's (THE FIRM) best-selling novel, this taut
thriller follows the travails that beset Shaw when her
theory on the cause of the deaths of two Supreme Court
Justices lands her name on the conspirators' hit list.
When Shaw teams up with reporter Gray Grantham (Denzel
Washington--THE HURRICANE) they find themselves dodging
deadly assassins in a suspenseful story that weaves
complex narrative strands. The well-cast film also
features a cameo by playwright-actor Sam Shepard (TRUE
WEST).

|
The
Player (1992)
Drama
Robert Altman's adaptation of Michael Tolkin's novel
gives the notorious director a chance to address perhaps
his greatest nemesis: the Hollywood studio system.
Disguised as a thriller, the film assembles virtually
every famous actor in Hollywood to create an exhilarating
blend of real life and fiction. Tim Robbins plays Griffin
Mill, a studio executive who begins to fear for his job
when upstart Larry Levy's (Peter Gallagher) name becomes a
hot topic on the lot. After receiving threatening
postcards from an unidentified writer, Griffin tracks down
David Kahane (Vincent D'Onofrio), who he thinks is the
guilty party. The two argue, with disastrous results.
Later, as Griffin struggles to keep his job while trying
to distance himself from the law, he finds himself falling
in love with Kahane's mysterious girlfriend (Greta Scacchi).
THE PLAYER is a vicious satire that exposes the Hollywood
industry as fraudulent, weak, and shallow. Altman's film
also sends up both the noir genre and filmmaking
technique, the latter notably in an extended opening shot
which is a sprawling one-take that covers the studio's
entire lot and features a series of hysterical pitches by
actual screenwriters, including Buck Henry offering forth
on his concept for THE GRADUATE 2. Bitter and electric,
THE PLAYER ends on an ironic upbeat note that perfectly
concludes a stellar picture.

Dying
Young (1991)
Drama
A simple romance that nonetheless carries a great deal
of emotional impact, DYING YOUNG tells the story of Hilary
O'Neil, an attractive young woman who, upon discovering
her live-in boyfriend in bed with another woman, must move
out and find a new job. She accepts a position as the
in-house caretaker of Victor Geddes (Campbell Scott), a
wealthy young man who is suffering from blood cancer.
Hilary's first experiences of the aftereffects of
chemotherapy leave her in doubt as to whether she can
handle the job, but Victor convinces her to stay, as he is
beginning to see in her a reason to live. When Victor
informs her that his chemo has been successfully
completed, they move to a secluded home to start a life
together, until cancer once again intrudes. The film is
rich in its portrayal of the hardships inflicted by cancer
patients and their loved ones, as well as the power of
love to lend strength to endure.

Hook
(1991)
Science Fiction/Fantasy
Director Steven Spielberg brings J.M. Barrie’s PETER
PAN to the screen with a delightfully modernized twist.
Forty-year-old Peter (Robin Williams) has grown up to be a
workaholic lawyer with more affection for his cell phone
than his wife and two children. When the family travels to
England to visit Granny Wendy (Maggie Smith), Peter’s
son and daughter are kidnapped by the villainous Captain
Hook (Dustin Hoffman). Peter’s faithful pal, Tinkerbell
(Julia Roberts), helps him return to Neverland--"Second
star to the right and straight on ‘til morning"--to
the world Peter has forgotten. There the Lost Boys welcome
Peter back and try to get him in shape for his fight with
Captain Hook. Peter must somehow remember his
long-forgotten boyhood in Neverland and learn how to fly
again before he can rescue his children away from the evil
clutches of Captain Hook. Bob Hoskins costars as Hook’s
right-hand man, Smee, and Gwyneth Paltrow, in her first
film role, plays the young Wendy. The film received an
Academy Award nomination for Best Song for John
Williams’s "When You’re Alone."

Sleeping
With the Enemy (1991)
Drama
Laura (Julia Roberts) and Martin (Patrick Bergen) have
the appearance of a perfect marriage, but shortly into the
film it becomes apparent that Laura's presence in their
opulent home and decadent lifestyle is as decoration and
servant. Moreover, Martin is obsessive, anally clean and
ruling tyrannically over his wife; she lives in fear of
the brutal punishment that descends when the canned goods
are imperfectly lined up or the towels hang unevenly.
Through an elaborate plan, Laura stages her own death and
escapes to start anew in a small Iowa town, where her next
door neighbor's efforts at friendship and burgeoning love
slowly chip away at her armor of distrust. But just as
Laura begins to relax into her new existence, her past
resurfaces in a chilling climax.
