Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio (2005)
Evelyn Ryan was a
devoted mother and housewife who used her
self-described "knack for words" to keep
her struggling family afloat. In the 1950s and
'60s, housewives across the country used their
wits to win thousands of dollars in cash and
prizes in jingle contests staged by corporations
to promote their products. But of all the
"jingle-belles" vying for supremacy,
none out-rhymed Evelyn Ryan, whose creative
resources usually corresponded directly to her
family's needs--and with ten kids and an alcoholic
husband, those needs were numerous and unending.
Applying her remarkable ingenuity and an uncommon
wit, Evelyn found the way to keep her family
together, despite the enormous odds stacked
against them.

World
Traveler (2002)
Drama
1 hr. 43 min. A contemporary road movie in the
tradition of Five Easy Pieces, World Traveler
centers on Cal (Crudup), a man to whom everything
in life has come easily. Possessing the sort of
dashing good looks and effortless charm that
endears him to both women and men, Cal enjoys
success as an architect and shares a comfortable
West Village apartment with his lovely wife and
adorable young son. But, in a classic case of
"watch-out-what-you-wish-for," Cal finds
himself in his early 30's with everything a man
could want and with his grasp far exceeding his
reach. And so, in a gesture that is at once
completely sudden yet obviously long in-the-works,
Cal hits the road in the family car - but without
the family. Before it's too late, Cal needs to
reach for things, probably for the first time in
his life. On his cross-country journey Cal
initially enjoys the advantages of the
unencumbered life. Working his way west, he takes
a job as a day laborer, shares drunken nights with
a newfound buddy (Derricks), picks up a hitchhiker
(Balaban), and tumbles into a series of rented
beds with a series of unquestioning, undemanding
women (Allen and Moore). But, with every
encounter, the romance of the open road somehow
eludes him. Even though he is looking for
something, Cal can't escape the fact that he is
also running away from something, and what he has
left behind is worth more than what he hopes to
find.

Cookie's
Fortune (1999)
Drama
Robert Altman revisits the lighthearted
territory of his 1970s comedies BREWSTER MCCLOUD
and A WEDDING and once again comes out a rousing
success. This time, a tightly wound narrative by
first-time screenwriter Anne Rapp keeps the laughs
rolling as the story unfolds over an eventful
Easter weekend in the small town of Holly Springs,
Mississippi. The town residents are peaceful, kind
folk--with the exception of Camille Dixon (Glenn
Close)--a pushy theatre director with an
incredibly shy younger sister, Cora (Julianne
Moore), whose estranged daughter Emma (Liv Tyler)
has just returned to town. On the heels of her
latest play, Camille is shocked to discover that
her Aunt Jewel Mae "Cookie" Orcutt
(Patricia Neal) has committed suicide. Terrified
at the thought of how this will tarnish the family
name, she eats the suicide note to make it look
like a burglary. This set-up leads the police to
one main suspect, Willis Richland (Charles S.
Dutton), who also happens to be Cookie’s best
friend. Although the rest of the town is convinced
Willis didn’t commit the crime, an outside
investigator (Courtney B. Vance) isn’t so sure.
As Easter Sunday and opening night of the play
arrive, the truth comes out, revealing more
secrets than anyone could have possibly imagined.
Director Altman tells his story at a leisurely
pace, beautifully recreating the eccentricities of
small town life in this sweet-natured tale.

The
Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)
Thriller
THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK is director
Steven Spielberg’s sequel to his original
dinosaur thriller. Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum)
returns for more dino-horror when, four years
after the disaster at the would-be amusement park,
another expedition is mounted by millionaire John
Hammond (Richard Attenborough). To document the
natural behavior of the beasts at a mysterious
Site B, Hammond sends a team comprising Malcolm;
Malcolm's girlfriend, paleontologist Dr. Sarah
Harding (Julianne Moore); and a wildlife
videographer (Vince Vaughn). They face adversity
in the form of a less-than-scrupulous big-game
hunter (Pete Postlethwaite) and, of course, the
terrible lizards themselves. The film is loosely
based on Michael Crichton’s novel THE LOST
WORLD, which was named after the 1912 Sir Arthur
Conan Doyle novel of the same name. Spielberg
proved his determination to alternate making
socially conscious films with directing movies of
sheer entertainment value; his prior film to THE
LOST WORLD was SCHINDLER’S LIST, and he followed
the dinosaur adventure with AMISTAD.

Roommates
(1995)
Comedy
This charming tale of a boy's evolving
relationship with his grandfather stars Peter Falk
as Rocky, a crusty and stubborn old man who raises
his grandson, Michael (D.B.Sweeney), after the boy
loses his parents at a young age. In 1960s
Pittsburgh, Michael grows up under Rocky's
watchful eye, eventually becoming a doctor working
in Ohio. But when Rocky gets evicted from his
apartment of 50 years, Michael has no choice but
to let the man move in with him. Much to Rocky's
chagrin, the two grown men share Michael's cramped
bachelor pad in a touching and hysterical reunion.
The old codger wastes no time in creating
friction, arguing incessantly with Michael about
his lifestyle, including his relationship with
girlfriend Beth (Julianne Moore). While Rocky does
eventually settle down and begin working at a
bakery, his grandson decides to make some
significant changes in his life that will affect
his grandfather. Despite their generational
differences, the two men grudgingly learn valuable
lessons from each other in this bittersweet
comedy. Peter Falk gives a fabulously diverse
performance, aging more than half a century during
the duration of the film, which was based on
screenwriter Max Apple's real-life experiences
captured in the book ROOMMATES: MY GRANDFATHER'S
STORY.

Short
Cuts (1993)
Drama
Using the short stories of Raymond Carver as a
jumping-off point, American maverick director
Robert Altman weaves a tapestry of interlocking
tales set against the seedy backdrop of
contemporary middle-class Los Angeles. Tracking
the various stages of denial, rage, and despair in
the lives of several couples--a philandering cop
and his masochistic spouse (Tim Robbins and
Madeline Stowe); a helicopter pilot who gets
revenge on his ex by trashing her house (Peter
Gallagher and Frances McDormand); a man and woman
whose perfect life falls apart when they lose
their son in a hit-and-run accident (Bruce Davison
and Andie MacDowell); a pool cleaner who listens
in mounting frustration to his wife performing
phone sex each day while tending her brood of
children (Chris Penn and Jennifer Jason Leigh); a
wealthy couple who are haunted by an incident from
the past (Matthew Modine and Julianne Moore); an
aging jazz singer and her suicidal daughter (Annie
Ross and Lori Singer); an alcoholic limo driver
and his waitress wife (Tom Waits and Lily
Tomlin)--Altman reveals their common threads of
family dysfunction and marital discord in the
unforgiving glare of the Southern California
sunlight. The result is a sweeping motion picture
that also stands as an important sociological
artifact of late 20th century Los Angeles life.

Drama
Rebecca De Mornay stars as a nanny with an
evil agenda in this psychological thriller
directed by Curtis Hanson (L.A. CONFIDENTIAL).
When her new obstetrician Dr. Mott (John DeLancie),
touches Claire Bartel (Annabella Sciorra)
inappropriately during an exam, Claire reports
him. The scandal ultimately causes Dr. Mott's
suicide and his wife's miscarriage. Determined to
have both a child and revenge, Mrs. Mott (De
Mornay), now going by the name Peyton Flanders,
poses as the perfect nanny and is hired by Claire
and her husband, Michael (Matt McCoy), to care for
their young daughter, Emma (Madeline Zima), and
infant son. Seemingly sweet and helpful, Peyton
slowly infiltrates the family’s world. Once she
has gained their trust, she begins to wreak havoc
in their lives. Claire begins to doubt her
husband’s fidelity, her abilities as a mother,
and virtually every other aspect of her
life--including her sanity--as Peyton deliberately
tries to ruin her life and replace her as a wife
and mother. De Mornay is a delicious villain--all
sugar and spice in front of the family but
positively venomous when plotting and executing
her revenge. Director Hanson crafts his thriller
with great skill and attention to character,
making this a must-see.
