But, in a classic case of "watch-out-what-you-wish-for," Cal finds himself in his early 30's with everything a man could want and with his grasp far exceeding his reach. And so, in a gesture that is at once completely sudden yet obviously long in-the-works, Cal hits the road in the family car - but without the family. Before it's too late, Cal needs to reach for things, probably for the first time in his life. On his cross-country journey Cal initially enjoys the advantages of the unencumbered life. Working his way west, he takes a job as a day laborer, shares drunken nights with a newfound buddy (Derricks), picks up a hitchhiker (Balaban), and tumbles into a series of rented beds with a series of unquestioning, undemanding women (Allen and Moore). But, with every encounter, the romance of the open road somehow eludes him. On the heels of her latest play, Camille is shocked to discover that her Aunt Jewel Mae "Cookie" Orcutt (Patricia Neal) has committed suicide. Terrified at the thought of how this will tarnish the family name, she eats the suicide note to make it look like a burglary. This set-up leads the police to one main suspect, Willis Richland (Charles S. Dutton), who also happens to be Cookie’s best friend. Although the rest of the town is convinced Willis didn’t commit the crime, an outside investigator (Courtney B. Vance) isn’t so sure. As Easter Sunday and opening night of the play arrive, the truth comes out, revealing more secrets than anyone could have possibly imagined. Director Altman tells his story at a leisurely pace, beautifully recreating the eccentricities of small town life in this sweet-natured tale.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)

Thriller
THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK is director Steven Spielberg’s sequel to his original dinosaur thriller. Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) returns for more dino-horror when, four years after the disaster at the would-be amusement park, another expedition is mounted by millionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough). To document the natural behavior of the beasts at a mysterious Site B, Hammond sends a team comprising Malcolm; Malcolm's girlfriend, paleontologist Dr. Sarah Harding (Julianne Moore); and a wildlife videographer (Vince Vaughn). They face adversity in the form of a less-than-scrupulous big-game hunter (Pete Postlethwaite) and, of course, the terrible lizards themselves. The film is loosely based on Michael Crichton’s novel THE LOST WORLD, which was named after the 1912 Sir Arthur Conan Doyle novel of the same name. Spielberg proved his determination to alternate making socially conscious films with directing movies of sheer entertainment value; his prior film to THE LOST WORLD was SCHINDLER’S LIST, and he followed the dinosaur adventure with AMISTAD.

While Rocky does eventually settle down and begin working at a bakery, his grandson decides to make some significant changes in his life that will affect his grandfather. Despite their generational differences, the two men grudgingly learn valuable lessons from each other in this bittersweet comedy. Peter Falk gives a fabulously diverse performance, aging more than half a century during the duration of the film, which was based on screenwriter Max Apple's real-life experiences captured in the book ROOMMATES: MY GRANDFATHER'S STORY.

Tracking the various stages of denial, rage, and despair in the lives of several couples--a philandering cop and his masochistic spouse (Tim Robbins and Madeline Stowe); a helicopter pilot who gets revenge on his ex by trashing her house (Peter Gallagher and Frances McDormand); a man and woman whose perfect life falls apart when they lose their son in a hit-and-run accident (Bruce Davison and Andie MacDowell); a pool cleaner who listens in mounting frustration to his wife performing phone sex each day while tending her brood of children (Chris Penn and Jennifer Jason Leigh); a wealthy couple who are haunted by an incident from the past (Matthew Modine and Julianne Moore); an aging jazz singer and her suicidal daughter (Annie Ross and Lori Singer); an alcoholic limo driver and his waitress wife (Tom Waits and Lily Tomlin)--Altman reveals their common threads of family dysfunction and marital discord in the unforgiving glare of the Southern California sunlight. Seemingly sweet and helpful, Peyton slowly infiltrates the family’s world. Once she has gained their trust, she begins to wreak havoc in their lives. Claire begins to doubt her husband’s fidelity, her abilities as a mother, and virtually every other aspect of her life--including her sanity--as Peyton deliberately tries to ruin her life and replace her as a wife and mother. De Mornay is a delicious villain--all sugar and spice in front of the family but positively venomous when plotting and executing her revenge. Director Hanson crafts his thriller with great skill and attention to character, making this a must-see.
