The
Gracie Way: An Illustrated History of the World's Greatest Martial
Arts Family
The faces and
stories of the sprawling Gracie family, who transformed Brazilian
jiu-jitsu from an unknown street technique into the dominant form
of martial arts today, are captured here. Introduced are
Grandmaster Helio Gracie, who as a frail boy in Brazil in the
1930s developed the art, creating leverage techniques that allowed
him to overcome other martial artists, regardless of size or
strength; Rickson Gracie, the mystical family champion who has
never been defeated in combat; and Royce Gracie, the most famous
active martial artist in the United States, who put Brazilian
jiu-jitsu on the map by winning the first three Ultimate Fighting
Championships before the largest pay-per-view audiences in
history. In addition to stunning action shots of the Gracies in
all the legendary matches and their unique perspectives on what
really went on during those fights, this book includes archival
photos of the family, from their beginnings in Brazil in the 1930
to the present day and the new generation of champions. Fans will
learn of Renzo's transformation from Rio street brawler to New
York celebrity and revered teacher; of Royce and Royler's exploits
as mischievous kids; and of Rickson's battle against one of Rio's
toughest drug gangs.
Japan's
Ultimate Martial Art: Ju-Jitsu Before 1882 The Classical Japanese
Art Of Self-Defense
This book discusses
classical Japanese jiu-jitsu, presenting the history of the art as
it can best be reconstructed, along with many illustrations and
discussions of the techniques. Just as with the approximately
200-300 schools of swordsmanship that existed between 1000 A.D.
and the mid-1800's, when they went into decline (with only about
15 surviving today), there were many styles also of jiu-jitsu,
often associated with a particular martial art tradition that
included training in the yari (spear), naginata (halberd), the
bow, and various other weapons, but most importantly, the sword,
as in the famous Kashima-Shinryu style that Karl Friday has
capably discussed in his scholarly book, Legacies of the Sword.
Here Craig attempts
to do the same thing for jiu-jitsu and I think succeeds very well.
Except for articles in various martial arts journals, there is no
book accessible to the general reader that deals with this
important topic. Overall, a fine book with much valuable
information that should be of interest to martial artists with an
interest in the old school or koryu Japanese arts.
Samurai
- An Illustrated History
This book covers the
Samurai pretty well. Unlike alot of the other books I've seen,
this book covers all samurai periods from the earliest to the
latest. It goes fairly in depth with armour and weapons giving
accurate dates to everything. Loads of colour photos and drawings.
This should be the
first book you buy on Samurai, even though it may not be you're
last. Will impress non-beginners as well.
Code
of the Samurai: A Modern Translation of the Bushido Shoshinsu
The Code of the
Samurai is a four-hundred-year-old explication of the rules and
expectations embodied in Bushido, the Japanese way of the warrior.
Bushido has played a major role in shaping the behavior of modern
Japanese government, corporations, society, and individuals, as
well as in shaping the modern Martial Artsl arts within Japan and
internationally. The Japanese original of this book has been one
of the primary sources on the tenets of Bushido, a way of thought
that remains fascinating to the modern world, East and West.

Brazilian
Jiu-Jitsu - Theory and Technique
This has got to be
one of the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu books around. With 110
techniques there's certainly plenty here to keep you going for a
very long time. I've read and heard some people say that the book
contains only beginner techniques, but I'm willing to bet a
handfull of cash that these people can't pull off the techniques
in the book like it's second nature to them - until you get to
that point the book is most definately valuable.
The book is top
quality with several colour photographs of each technique broken
down into each important aspect of the move. The demonstrations
sometimes miss tiny bits out (and I mean tiny), but you would
easily figure these things out for yourself as you drill the
techniques.
Mastering
Jujutsu
In recent years, the
grappling arts have proven to be the most effective form of combat
in mixed martial arts (MMA) and no-holds-barred (NHB)
competitions. Above all others, the Gracie brand of Brazilian
jujitsu has become recognized as the preeminent fighting style in
unarmed combat. Now Renzo Gracie - one of the most successful
athletes in the world-renowned Gracie family reveals the inner
workings of the art.
With nearly 30 years
of training, Gracie competes at the highest levels and is a
champion of numerous grappling, MMA, and NHB events. Also an
instructor of many students who have gone on to become champions,
Gracie now provides that instruction to help you develop the same
techniques and strategies that the Gracie clan has used to
dominate their opponents. In Mastering Jujitsu, Gracie covers it
all in depth from the art’s origins and techniques to practical
applications that even the most experienced black belts will
benefit from. Starting with isolated skill development techniques,
you will progress to a full set of tactics and fight plans and
become familiar with the concept of combat phases. You will learn
how to attack from any phase as well as how to react to your
opponent. Whether you’re in a bottom position or attacking from
the top, Gracie reveals the key strategies designed to give you
the upper hand in close combat fighting.
Brazilian
Jiu-Jitsu Self-Defense Techniques
Brazilian jiu-jitsu
has turned the martial arts world upside down by emphasizing
real-life situations and results over the dramatic kicks and
throws of formal competition, making it also one of the most
effective self-defense techniques for non-athletes. This guide to
the self-defense techniques taught in the classes of Royce Gracie,
one of the biggest figures in the world of jiu-jitsu, provides
lessons that anyone, regardless of strength or size, can learn to
neutralize an attacker in seconds. It offers a variety of defenses
to use against knife and gun attacks, as well as escapes from
headlocks, choke holds, and other situations that attackers use on
the street. Advice on practicing, falling and rolling, and
following a specific diet make this book the next best thing to
taking the classes that are popular with the United States
military, police academies, and women's self-defense schools.
The fastest-growing
martial art in the world is submission grappling, a style that
sheds formal rules like old clothing and allows combatants to get
down to the pure physics of fighting: two men, no gis, one winner.
Whether it is in no-holds-barred events like the Ultimate Fighting
Championship and Pride, or in the ADCC World Submission Wrestling
Championships, submission grappling is the style that the
world’s greatest athletes are using to pit themselves against
one another and determine who reigns supreme. It can be considered
the ultimate evolution of the martial arts.

Combat
Jiu-Jitsu
Norman Leff has been
training in the martial arts for half a century. Back in the days
when martial arts were still considered mystical and mysterious in
this country, Norman was already earning his first black belt. His
training took a dramatic turn in the 1960's when, living in South
America, he met a former Royal Japanese Marine who revealed to him
the secrets of combat jiu jitsu - a non-sport oriented style of
jiu jitsu used by the Japanese military in hand to hand combat
situations. Later, as a bouncer in New York, Norman learned to
apply these techniques in a real street encounter. Learn the
atemi-waza strikes, takedowns, finishing holds and fight stoppers
of combat jiu jitsu.
Small
Circle Ju-Jitsu
This book should be
a part of every martial artist's library. I bought it several
years ago and have reviewed it several times. The techniques are
practical and efficient. It really doesn't matter what style you
train in, the fundamentals of this book can enhance any style. If
you are a current Jujitsu or Judo student or technician, this book
take techniques you may already know and increases their
effectiveness. It is truly amazing what a difference a degree or
two and a little push-pull action can make in a traditional
technique. Wally Jay has made a wonderful contribution to the
martial arts world by writing and putting this book together and
sharing his years of study and research with the rest of us.

Essential
Anatomy - For Healing & Martial Arts
If you want to know
that little bit (or actually a helluva lot) more about how your
body works this is a great resource.
Detailed yet
easy-to-understand descriptions of the human body with over 100
diagrams split into the main functions of the body. One great
thing about this book is the seperation into Eastern and Western
approaches, giving the reader the chance to compare notes.
In my view, if you
understand exactly why a technique causes pain to someone, you
will then know how to apply the technique that little bit better.
