Lost
in La Mancha (2003)
Documentary
1 hr. 32 min. ost In La Mancha may be the first 'un-making of'
documentary. In a genre that exists to hype films before their
release, Lost In La Mancha presents an unexpected twist: it is the
story of a film that does not exist. Instead of a sanitised
glimpse behind the scenes, Lost In La Mancha offers a unique,
in-depth look at the harsher realities of filmmaking. With drama
that ranges from personal conflicts to epic storms, this is a
record of a film disintegrating - specifically, Terry Gilliam's
adaptation of Don Quixote.

The
Ninth Gate (2000)
Drama and Thriller
Based on a novel by Arturo Pיrez-Reverte (THE CLUB
DUMAS) and coscripted by director Roman Polanski, THE NINTH GATE
was Polanski’s first feature after a long break following the
release of 1995’s DEATH AND THE MAIDEN--in between, there was an
aborted project that faltered when designated star John Travolta
opted out. Dean Corso (Johnny Depp) is a cynical rare books dealer
hired by Boris Balkan (Frank Langella), a scholar specializing in
books on Satanism, to recover the only two remaining copies (in
addition to the one owned by Balkan) of THE NINE GATES OF THE
KINGDOM OF SHADOWS, a 17th-century text with cryptic illustrations
supposedly contributed by Lucifer himself. Corso’s investigation
takes him to Europe, where he is pursued by a strange girl
(Emmanuelle Seigner) who seemes to assume the role of his guardian
angel: Bizarre deaths inspired by the book’s morbid
illustrations befall all those who come into contact with the
book--except himself. This occult mystery should satisfy fans of
subtly creepy, stylish tales of the supernatural along the lines
of Polanski’s own ROSEMARY’S BABY.

Dead
Man (1996)
Western
In bringing his distinct vision to the Western genre,
writer-director Jim Jarmusch has created a quasi-mystical
avant-garde drama that remains a deeply spiritual viewing
experience. After losing his parents and fiancיe, a
Cleveland accountant named William Blake (a remarkable Johnny Depp)
spends all his money and takes a train to the frontier town of
Machine in order to work at a factory. Upon arriving in Machine,
he is denied his expected job and finds himself a fugitive after
murdering a man in self-defense. Wounded and helpless, Blake is
befriended by Nobody (Gary Farmer), a wandering Native American
who considers him to be a ghostly manifestation of the famous
poet. Nobody aids Blake in his flight from three bumbling bounty
hunters, preparing him for his final journey--a return to the
world of the spirits.
Jarmusch once again employs the beautifully contrasted
black-and-white photography of Robby Mller, which sets a
poetic, dreamy mood. He also fades in and out of scenes in order
to better reflect Blake’s dazed, weak mental state. Adding an
even greater depth to the film is Neil Young’s haunting score,
which completes the overall effect. DEAD MAN stands firmly as a
timeless work of art whose impact only increases upon subsequent
viewings.

Nick
of Time (1995)
Action/Adventure
In John Badham's NICK OF TIME, Johnny Depp stars as Gene
Watson, a mild-mannered, widowed accountant, and the father of
six-year-old Lynn (Courtney Chase). While in Los Angeles's Union
train station, they are abducted by a mysterious couple posing as
police officers, Mr. Smith (Christopher Walken) and Ms. Jones
(Roma Maffia). They give Gene a loaded gun and these orders:
assassinate the "flaming liberal" governor of California
(Marsha Mason) within the next 90 minutes, or they will kill his
beloved daughter. Gene reluctantly agrees, and he is taken to the
Bonaventure Hotel where the governor is making an appearance.
Tension mounts as the clock ticks and Gene must outwit his
conniving kidnappers. Shot in real time, the action of the movie
is documented in the actual 90 minute running time of the movie.
As Gene faces his gruesome task, minutes slip away, creating a
palpable tension and a breathtaking reminder of every agonizing
second. Christopher Walken is at his devilish best, wickedly
tormenting the innocent hero. Reminiscent of Hitchcockian
dilemmas, Gene is an ordinary man trapped in an extraordinary
situation, forced to act before it is too late.

Arizona
Dream (1994)
Drama
Johnny Depp is Axel, a New York fish tagger who claims to have
the ability to listen to the fishes' dreams. One night, he is
visited by his wannabe actor brother (Vincent Gallo) and told that
his uncle (Jerry Lewis) wants him as his best man in his wedding
in Arizona. Axel grew up with his uncle, who owns a Cadillac
dealership, and no longer likes him as much as he used to. He
doesn't want to attend, but, in a film where suspension of
disbelief is required most of the time, he is shanghaied by his
brother and driven all way to Arizona while in a drunken stupor.
There, he falls for a wacky and lusty widow (Faye Dunaway), and
later her daughter (Lili Taylor). There is much to like about this
film; some scenes are pure genius and turn you on in a way that
makes you want to stick with it through its many unsure moments.
Some of the more brilliant set pieces include Gallo's recreation
of the crop-dusting scene from NORTH BY NORTHWEST at an amateur
night in a dusty old bar, and dinner scene set to the music of
Django Reinhardt where Taylor tries to commit suicide with a pair
of panty hose. A vastly uneven film that sabotages itself at some
key moments, but its highs are great enough to recommend it.

What's
Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)
Drama
Bizarre, whimsical, and touching scenes mark WHAT'S EATING
GILBERT GRAPE. Johnny Depp is Gilbert, the eldest brother in a
large family of a very large (morbidly obese, actually) mother
(Darlene Cates) who hasn't left the house since her husband
committed suicide years before. Leonardo DiCaprio, who received an
Academy Award nomination for his role, is Arnie, Gilbert's
retarded teenage brother who needs constant supervision (he's
often found scaling the town water tower). Caring, passive Gilbert
is burdened beyond reason, living a dead-end life in a dying small
town, stocking shelves at a grocery store whose business being
taken over by the new mall supermarket. Gilbert's best friends (Crispin
Glover and John C. Reilly) see their futures in the form of
undertaker and Burger Barn owner, and Gilbert's other social life
is taken up with a random affair with a frustrated and reckless
housewife (Mary Steenburgen). Everyone needs the constantly
patient Gilbert, whose future seems equally grim until
well-traveled, straightforward Becky (Juliette Lewis) and her
nonconformist grandmother (Penelope Branning) come to town. Their
camper is in need of repair, so Becky stays long enough to
actually have an effect on Gilbert, making his new life spiral in
wild ways. Based on the novel by Peter Hedges (who also wrote the
screenplay), WHAT'S EATING GILBERT GRAPE is quirky, irresistible,
and endearingly eccentric without being a freak show.

Cry-Baby
(1990)
Comedy
Cult director John Waters goes mainstream -- sort of -- in
this send-up of 1950s teen melodramas. Heart-throb Johnny Depp
stars in the title role as a glamorous delinquent who heads a gang
of hoods known as the Drapes. Trouble starts when Cry-Baby falls
for a squeaky clean blonde from a rival group, the Squares. Their
star-crossed romance sets off a rumble between the warring
factions and Cry-Baby ends up doing time in reform school.
Chock-full of rock 'n roll and Waters' usual cavalcade of
eccentric celebrities, including Patty Hearst, Iggy Pop and former
porn star Traci Lords.

Edward
Scissorhands (1990)
Science Fiction/Fantasy
In Tim Burton's EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, a suburban fairy tale
with incredibly imaginative sets, an Avon lady, Peg Boggs (Dianne
Wiest), discovers the half-finished experiment--a man/monster
named Edward (Johnny Depp)--of a mad scientist (played magically
by Vincent Price) living in the neighborhood's old abandoned
castle. The scientist died before replacing the shy man's large
shears with real hands. When Peg attempts to bring Edward into her
suburban world, to live among her skeptical family (husband Alan
Arkin and daughter Winona Ryder) and gossipy neighbors, his
hands--dangerous yet capable of creating things of great
beauty--make for some awkward, funny, and poignant situations:
Edward as a topiary gardener, Edward as a cutting-edge hair
stylist. EDWARD SCISSORHANDS is a story about tolerance,
difference, and creativity as much as it is a story of a young
man's coming of age (the young man in question is, of course, a
monster). In the ironically surreal world of Edward's suburban
community, he must try to find his place in it, and in the world
at large.

91 min. A hellish,

predatory fiend. An excellent, surprisingly surrealistic genre
entry from the master, Wes Craven.
