series installment, which finds Chinese nationalist and kung fu
hero Wong Fei Hong heading to the American west. But a conk on

Action/Adventure
A pulp serial author with numerous personal problems
resulting in a serious case of writer's block, temporarily
escapes reality by living vicariously through one of his lead
characters in story about a quest for a mythical scripture. This
story within a story has Li (LETHAL WEAPON 4, ROMEO MUST DIE,
BLACK MASK) up against an enormous mutant marsupial, Japanese
sumo wrestlers and ninjas, although the pen is mightier than the
sword (or metal grill, as it were) in this film by famed
director Siu-Tung Ching (A CHINESE GHOST STORY, SWORDSMAN,
EXECUTIONERS.)

|
The
Enforcer (1995)
Art/Foreign
A secret agent infiltrates the Hong Kong triad scene with
the help of his son, whose low-key admiration for his detached
but loving dad springs from the story's blend of family
"honor" melodrama and conventional "cop"
action. Considered to be one of Li's best.

Fist
of Legend (1994)
Art/Foreign
A loving homage to the 1973 Bruce Lee kung fu classic
CHINESE CONNECTION, updated with increased production values, a
ROMEO AND JULIET-style romantic subplot, and a more temperate
view of the Japanese enemy. A martial arts protege (Li) leads
his classmates in revolt after their teacher is poisoned by the
invading Japanese. The final fight scene is arguably one of the
best of all time. Fights choreographed by Yuen Wo Ping, action
director of THE MATRIX.

Kung
Fu Master (1993)
Art/Foreign
Let Li stars in this kung fu fantasy whose circuitous plot,
adapted from a story by Yin Jong, boasts such delirious
developments as kung-fu cannibals, evil nuns, invincible heroes,

conflict between two warring factions who are each trying to
obtain the To Lung and the Yee Tin, two swords which, when
possessed by the same owner, will render that person the the
Supreme Master of Martial Arts. Featuring fantastic images, such
as an old kung fu wizard who occupies a giant living sphere, and
amazing wire fu battle scenes, KUNG FU MASTER is an often
confusing, exhilarating, and entertaining movie.

kidnapped by Master Asia, who also happens to be in possession
of the aforementioned scrolls. Filled with the same whimsical
spirit of the original, THE LEGEND OF THE SWORDSMAN (originally
known as THE SWORDSMAN II) is every bit as entertaining as its
predecessor.

Once
Upon a Time in China (1991)
Art/Foreign
In one of the recurring gags of ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA,
attempts to take Wong Fei Hung's picture always fail. The
failure to capture the image of Wong (Jet Li) serves as an
appropriate metaphor for the place of the Ching Dynasty folk
hero in Chinese cultural memory. A legendary master of a variety
of kung fu styles, Wong has been subject to numerous
interpretations in dime novels and films since the 1930s. In the
late 1970s an irreverent portrait of the young Wong Fei Hung
emerged in DRUNKEN MASTER. In director Tsui Hark's hand, the
beloved historical figure is given the full lionized treatment
as he fights for dignity and self-determination against Western
imperialists. A revisionist drama that recalls the struggle of
the small-property owner fighting for her land in Sergio Leone's
ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, Hark's epic is both a tragic and
heroic examination of China's transition to modernity. Like the
best of Hark's films (ZU: WARRIORS OF THE MAGIC MOUNTAIN), ONCE
UPON A TIME contains imaginative fight sequences, including
"no-shadow" kicks and a thrilling battle using bamboo
ladders.
