Jared is the guitarist and vocalist of the band 30 Seconds to Mars, along with his brother, Shannon, on drums, Tomo Milicevic on guitar, and Matt Wachter on bass. The band has two albums: 2002's self titled debut 30 Seconds to Mars (Also known as "Red Planet") and 2005's A Beautiful Lie. 

They began opening for other bands, and started their first ever headlining tour, Forever Night Never Day, in March of 2006. Their music video for "The Kill" has been a constant player on MTV's Elite 8 and T-Minus Rock and is also popular on many Fuse programs. Unlike the majority of "Movie Star turned Rock Star" acts, Jared prefers the band's music to promote the band instead of his acting fame.
