Jared Joseph Leto (born December 26, 1971) is an American actor and musician. His first major acting performance was as Jordan Catalano in the television series My So-Called Life. This led to a growing film career, including a critically-acclaimed portrayal of a drug addict in Requiem for a Dream.
Additionally, Leto is the vocalist and guitarist of the rock band 30 Seconds to Mars. Family: Leto was born in Bossier City, Louisiana. He has one older brother, Shannon, and two younger half-brothers from his father’s second marriage. His mother, Constance, continued to raise Jared and Shannon after she and their father divorced, and has since remarried. His father died after remarrying.
After dropping out briefly in the 10th grade, Jared decided to return and focus on his education at Flint Hill School in Oakton, Virginia. He graduated from the prep school Emerson Preparatory School, in Washington, DC, in 1989. When he finished school, Leto enrolled at Philadelphia’s University of the Arts to pursue his interests in painting. However, he then transferred to the School of Visual Arts in New York City after developing an interest in acting
In 1992, Jared Leto moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music, but also accepted some part-time acting roles. Two years later, he landed a role in the TV show My So-Called Life in which he played Jordan Catalano, opposite Claire Danes. After the show ended in 1995, Leto acted in several films such as How to Make an American Quilt, Girl, Interrupted, Urban Legend, The Thin Red Line, Prefontaine and Fight Club.
They began opening for other bands, and started their first ever headlining tour, Forever Night Never Day, in March of 2006. Their music video for “The Kill” has been a constant player on MTV’s Elite 8 and T-Minus Rock and is also popular on many Fuse programs.
Unlike the majority of “Movie Star turned Rock Star” acts, Jared prefers the band’s music to promote the band instead of his acting fame.
