Next
Friday (2000)
Set two
years after the events in FRIDAY, NEXT FRIDAY follows a day
in the life of protagonist Craig (Ice Cube), who must flee
Los Angeles after neighborhood bully Debo breaks out of
prison, vowing to beat him to a pulp. Craig escapes to his
uncle Elroy's house in Rancho Cucamonga, only to discover
that life in the suburbs is even more screwed up than in the
ghetto. His uncle is into S&M; his aunt is a
nymphomaniac; the neighbors are a bunch of gangsters; and
his cousin is chased by a former girlfriend and a thuggish
woman named Baby D. The fourth film produced by Ice Cube,
NEXT FRIDAY is, like its predecessor, a buddy film pairing
straight man Ice Cube with fresh comedic talent Mike Epps.
Helmed by first-time director Steve Carr, who is known for
making stylish videos for top rap acts, the film sends up
raunchy life in suburbia from an African American
perspective. The soundtrack is liberally sprinkled with
thumping hip-hop tracks, including "Chin Check,"
the first new song from the rap group NWA in many years.

Anaconda
(1997)
A big-budget
B-movie thrill ride, ANACONDA stars Jon Voight as Sarone, a
hardened, crusty river man riding the Amazon who is rescued
by a film crew when the propeller on his boat malfunctions.
The crew, led by director Terri Flores (Jennifer Lopez),
hopes to make a documentary about the Amazon tribe known as
The People of the Mist. She is joined by her cinematographer
(Ice Cube) and a scientist (Eric Stoltz), among others.
Unfortunately for all of them, a monstrous, 40-foot
anaconda--which habitually swallows its prey whole--is on
the rampage. The snake, which is a marvel of effects
technology achieved through a seamless combination of
animatronics and computer animation, helped make this one of

Friday
(1995)
Thoroughly
charming and totally hilarious day-in-the-life comedy in
which co-writer Ice Cube plays the stoic Craig opposite
Chris Tucker's Smokey, a brilliantly rendered hyperactive
marijuana enthusiast. The two twentysomethings, Craig
recently wrongly fired and Smokey terminally slacking and
scamming, barely make it through one highly eventful day.
Eloquent commentary on themes like community, family,
friendship, and violence is seamlessly blended with lighter
treatments of young romance, bathroom emergencies, nosy
neighbors and much more. Casually impeccable performances by
the entire cast make this film a standout.

The
Glass Shield (1995)
With THE
GLASS SHIELD, acclaimed director Charles Burnett (KILLER OF
SHEEP, TO SLEEP WITH ANGER) tackles the problematic issue of
racism within the police force. J.J. Johnson (Michael
Boatman) has wanted to be a cop ever since he was a kid. And
now that he's just been promoted to the position of deputy
in the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Office, he's going to learn
what being a police officer is really all about. As the
first black deputy in Edgemar’s all-white Sheriff's
station, he must learn to adapt if his new assignment is
going to work out. Befriending the station’s only other
minority, the Jewish, female Deborah Fields (Lori Petty),
J.J. soon realizes it's impossible to "get along"
or be one of the "good guys" when police
brutality, political corruption and rampant racism reign
supreme. After discovering that a man he has helped to
indict (played with ferocious intensity by Ice Cube) is, in
fact, the victim of a monumental cover up, J.J. risks his
future by butting heads with the powers that be. Shelved
after conflict erupted between Burnett and the film’s
distributor, Miramax, THE GLASS SHIELD remains a
provocative, tense thriller that addresses its sensitive
subject matter with grace and intelligence.

Higher
Learning (1994)
The third
installment in John Singleton's trilogy about South Central
Los Angeles, HIGHER LEARNING examines mid-1990s university
politics from racial, sexual, and economic standpoints. At
fictional Columbus University (where a statue of the
explorer stands witness to the dominant culture's
supremacy), three freshman arrive to find a campus ready to
explode. Malik (Omar Epps) wavers among the influences of
revolution-preaching super-senior Fudge (Ice Cube),
no-excuses Professor Phipps (Laurence Fishburne), and his
motivated girlfriend Deja (Tyra Banks). Kristen (Kristy
Swanson), another neophyte, is thrown into sexual confusion
when she meets a charismatic lesbian, while the socially
inept Remy (Michael Rapaport) can only fit in with the local
skinheads. The storylines cross and complicate as each
character tries to discover what's right, but the potential
for violence grows with every wrong choice they make.
Singleton recruited an emsemble of considerable talent to
flesh out the complex plot, which allows him to deal
efficiently with a breadth of concerns without preaching.

that take no prisoners.

Boyz
N The Hood (1991)
John
Singleton emerged from USC film school with his passionate
script already written, and at age 23 he made the film that
spawned a score of ghetto dramas. From the opening shot--a
sign reading "Stop"--to the final message of
"Increase the Peace," Singleton's desire to
galvanize his audience is clear. The violence destroying
South Central Los Angeles is seen through the eyes of Tre
Styles (Cuba Gooding Jr.), whose intelligence and common
sense would be wasted in the 'hood if not for his father,
Furious (Laurence Fishburne), who imparts discipline and
responsibility to his son. Tre's friends aren't so lucky,
though, especially Doughboy (Ice Cube), who has been in and
out of institutions since childhood and now sits on his
porch with a forty in his hand and a pistol in his
waistband. Singleton is ambitious enough to tackle a host of
problems, from African American business practices to the
bias of the SAT test, but the real power of the film lies in
the performances of its principals. Cuba Gooding, in his
first role, doesn't let Tre come off like a goody two-shoes,
while Ice Cube gives a tragic nobility to a young man who
knows he's doomed.
