Prey
for Rock and Roll (2003)
Drama and
Musical/Performing Arts
This is the story of an all-girl rock quartet,
Clamdandy (Gershon, Petty, Cole and de Matteo),
trying to break out of obscurity on the Los Angeles
scene, even as the realities of the music business
(and the ages of the two older members) bear down on
them, and their own personal problems also pose
serious barriers to the success of the band... as an
opportunity to open for a legendary punk group (X)
arises, which could finally be the big chance
they've been waiting for, if they can overcome their
obstacles to actually do it. Specifically, Clamdandy
is led by guitarist/lead singer Jacki (Gershon), who
is two days shy of her 40th birthday as the movie
starts, which leads her to question whether it's
time to quit the rock star dream and just
concentrate on her tattoo parlor. Providing Jacki
with her core support are lesbian lovers Faith
(Petty) (lead guitar) and Sally (Cole) (drums), both
of whom face adversity as the story unfolds.
Meanwhile, providing more problems for the group is
bassist Tracy (de Matteo), a spoiled trust fund brat
who spends her money on her debilitating addictions
to alcohol and heroin. Added to the mix are Sally's
brother, Animal (Blucas), who is recently released
from prison and Tracy's erratic boyfriend, Ivan
(Martin).

who has recently been released to a halfway house,
catches word of her predicament, he decides to kill
her husband with the intention of telling the
authorities that he and Lila are lovers and that
they planned the murder together. His story is so
convincing that even Lila's police detective lover
(Michael Biehn) begins to believe it. BORDERLINE is
a well-acted neo-noir with solid turns from Gershon
and Flannery.

Touch
(1997)
Comedy
Based on a novel by Elmore Leonard, TOUCH
chronicles a young former Franciscan monk's return
to Los Angeles following years spent in a remote
jungle monastery. Charlie Lawson--or Juvenal (Skeet
Ulrich), as he is known--takes a job in a rehab
center, where he discovers stigmata on his palms and
a gift for healing when he restores a blind woman's
sight. As word of his miracles gets out, con man
Bill Hill (Christopher Walken) sees money in these
divine occurrences and sends promoter pal Lynn
Faulkner (Bridget Fonda) to infiltrate Juvenal's
world and find out if he's authentic. In true
farcical style, she falls for him in the process.
What follows are many slightly zany attempts to
capture Juvenal and his powers by a religious zealot
and two sharklike reporters. Surprisingly slick and
light, TOUCH (based on the novel by Elmore Leonard)
is highlighted by a knockout supporting cast and is
filled with cool dialogue and enhanced by hip
production design. Director Paul Schrader once again
looks at religion in the context of the modern
world--this time with a sense of humor--in this fun
and original film.

Showgirls
(1995)
Drama
High-strung, statuesque Nomi Mallone (Elizabeth
Berkely) is determined to be a dancer in Las Vegas,
whatever it takes--but she starts out as a stripper.
Through her seamstress roommate (Gina Ravera), Nomi
catches the attention of the voracious bisexual
Cristal (Gina Gershon), star of an extravagant pagan
sex show called "Goddess" which plays
nightly at the swanky Stardust Casino. Through
Cristal's influence, Nomi gets a chance to audition
for "Goddess" and is soon involved in all
sorts of sordid backstage goings-on, including
bitchy dueling with Cristal over Stardust head
honcho Zack (Kyle McLachlan). Maligned by many
critics upon its original release, SHOWGIRLS has
since become a true camp classic, revived for
midnight showings and beloved for its decadence,
high nudity yield, and outrageously catty dialogue
(courtesy of screenwriter Joe Eszterhas). Its
director is Paul Verhoeven (ROBOCOP, TOTAL RECALL),
so one can safely assume SHOWGIRLS' over-the-top
hostility and sexuality is meant to be a satire of
American culture. One of the first big-budget
Hollywood movies to be released with an NC-17
rating, its lack of box office success meant few
others would have the guts to follow.

The
Player (1992)
Drama
Robert Altman's adaptation of Michael Tolkin's
novel gives the notorious director a chance to
address perhaps his greatest nemesis: the Hollywood
studio system. Disguised as a thriller, the film
assembles virtually every famous actor in Hollywood
to create an exhilarating blend of real life and
fiction. Tim Robbins plays Griffin Mill, a studio
executive who begins to fear for his job when
upstart Larry Levy's (Peter Gallagher) name becomes
a hot topic on the lot. After receiving threatening
postcards from an unidentified writer, Griffin
tracks down David Kahane (Vincent D'Onofrio), who he
thinks is the guilty party. The two argue, with
disastrous results. Later, as Griffin struggles to
keep his job while trying to distance himself from
the law, he finds himself falling in love with
Kahane's mysterious girlfriend (Greta Scacchi). THE
PLAYER is a vicious satire that exposes the
Hollywood industry as fraudulent, weak, and shallow.
Altman's film also sends up both the noir genre and
filmmaking technique, the latter notably in an
extended opening shot which is a sprawling one-take
that covers the studio's entire lot and features a
series of hysterical pitches by actual
screenwriters, including Buck Henry offering forth
on his concept for THE GRADUATE 2. Bitter and
electric, THE PLAYER ends on an ironic upbeat note
that perfectly concludes a stellar picture.
