Circus
(2000)
In this thrilling crime story set
in Brighton, England, Leo Garfield (John Hannah) is a con man and
gambler who is married to the gorgeous Lily (Famke Janssen), an
American woman with a shady past. About to be pressured into
running a casino in Manchester for the crooked Bruno Maitland
(Brian Conley), Leo is hired to murder a friend's wife, who turns
out to be the girlfriend of Moose (Tiny Lister), Bruno's enormous
bodyguard. The man who hired Leo is actually Julius Harvey (Peter
Stormare), Bruno's flighty accountant. As the double crosses begin
to twist and turn at an alarming rate, Leo must also dig his way
out of the enormous debt he has incurred with a pair of thuggish
bookies, Troy (Eddie Izzard) and Bruno (Brian Connelly). Also
making an appearance is Elmo Somerset (Fred Ward), a recently
paroled American who is looking to exact revenge on Lily. Working
from a taut, clever script, director Rob Walker's CIRCUS is an
action-packed, darkly humorous, suspenseful tale that features an
overabundance of pop culture references. Hannah uses the charming
persona he established in FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL and SLIDING
DOORS to add intrigue to the proceedings, and Janssen delivers yet
another credible performance that proves she isn't just a pretty
face.

Love
and Sex (2000)
Beautiful young journalist Kate
Welles is frustrated with the puff pieces her editor always
assigns her. She is also deflated by being left on the doorstep of
a lengthy live-in relationship with lover number thirteen, Adam.
Fancying herself somewhat of an expert on the archetypal love/sex
differentiation, she relishes an opportunity to write an article
about the subject. But as her preparations lead her to reflect on
some of her more ill-fated encounters (from the high-school
Lolita-phile, Gerard, to the ardent but unexpectedly married Eric,
to Adam, her beloved artiste terrible), Kate begins to question
some of her choices and apparent inability to commit long-term.

X-Men
(2000)
Based on the long-running Marvel
comic book series, X-MEN takes place in the near future, as
certain humans are evolving into mutants with special powers. In
the Canadian wilderness, a young runaway mutant named Rogue (Anna
Paquin) and a bad-tempered, quick-healing mutant with retractable
metal claws called Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) are suddenly attacked
by Sabertooth, one of Magneto's (Ian McKellen) powerful lackeys.
Fortunately, Cyclops (James Marsden) and Storm (Halle Berry),
students of the compassionate Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick
Stewart), interfere and bring them back to Xavier's School for
Gifted Youngsters. Here Wolverine and Rogue learn more about the
conflict between Xavier and the militant Magneto, who wants to
power a device that will genetically alter humans, with possibly
deadly results. Only Xavier's students can stop Magneto's plans.
Director Bryan Singer (THE USUAL SUSPECTS) displays his expertise
with an ensemble cast, accomplishing a feat by making the first
live-action film about an entire group of superheroes. Hugh
Jackman's portrayal of the ill-tempered Wolverine is dead-on,
while Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are ideally matched in
their Martin Luther King, Jr.- and Malcolm X-like roles. Smart and
well-paced, X-MEN towers above most comic book movies.

Goldeneye
(1995)
Directed by Martin Campbell,
GOLDENEYE makes the transition to a more modern image for the
James Bond series. Bond's out-of-date womanizing is presented with
a feminist challenge from the newly cast Judi Dench as an
impenetrable M, and Samantha Bond as a wiser and more forthright
Moneypenny. The action sequences, replete with helicopter hijinks
and copious explosions, are complex and stylish, making the film a
polished sensation.
This installment in the series introduces actor Pierce Brosnan in
the role of suave, debonair, irresistible 007. Despite the end of
the Cold War, James Bond still finds himself pitted against
nefarious Russians who want to rule the world. This time around,
his enemies are a gang of mobsters and former military men who
have gained access to the Goldeneye, which can cut off electrical
currents in London. Alec Trevelyan (Sean Bean) is the leader, with
General Ourumov (Gottfried John) an additional threat. Sizzling
Bond babe Xenia Onatopp (Famke Janssen) is the sleek robber who,
with Ourumov, successfully steals the Goldeneye, which the
villains plan to use in their quest to control financial markets
around the globe. However, this grizzly group of scoundrels is no
match for Bond, who constantly outwits their attempts to
assassinate him. Bond rescues the tough and lovely Natalya
Simonova (Izabella Scorupco), who was caught in Trevalyan's deadly
web, and she eventually helps Bond turn the tables on his foes as
he uses his quick instincts, innovative weapons, and cool gadgetry
to save the day.
