Prey
for Rock and Roll (2003)
Drama and
Musical/Performing Arts
This is the story of an all-girl rock quartet,
Clamdandy (Gershon, Petty, Cole and de Matteo),
trying to break out of obscurity on the Los Angeles
scene, even as the realities of the music business
(and the ages of the two older members) bear down on
them, and their own personal problems also pose
serious barriers to the success of the band... as an
opportunity to open for a legendary punk group (X)
arises, which could finally be the big chance
they've been waiting for, if they can overcome their
obstacles to actually do it. Specifically, Clamdandy
is led by guitarist/lead singer Jacki (Gershon), who
is two days shy of her 40th birthday as the movie
starts, which leads her to question whether it's
time to quit the rock star dream and just
concentrate on her tattoo parlor. Providing Jacki
with her core support are lesbian lovers Faith
(Petty) (lead guitar) and Sally (Cole) (drums), both
of whom face adversity as the story unfolds.
Meanwhile, providing more problems for the group is
bassist Tracy (de Matteo), a spoiled trust fund brat
who spends her money on her debilitating addictions
to alcohol and heroin. Added to the mix are Sally's
brother, Animal (Blucas), who is recently released
from prison and Tracy's erratic boyfriend, Ivan
(Martin).

Made
(2001)
Comedy and
Crime/Gangster
1 hr. 35 min. Following their success with
SWINGERS, Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn team up again
in MADE, a comedy about two very different
down-on-their-luck L.A. friends who get caught up in
a dangerous deal in New York City. Favreau stars as
Bobby, a hardworking, very serious construction
worker who dreams of becoming a boxer and settling
down with his stripper girlfriend (Famke Janssen)
and her young daughter. Vaughn plays Ricky, an
obnoxious ne'er-do-well who thinks that pulling off
a big job for boss Max (Peter Falk) will be their
ticket to the big time. The duo is sent off to New
York to take part in a deal they know nothing about;
while Bobby waits calmly for them to be discreetly
contacted, Rudy never shuts his mouth, barking
orders at random people, flashing his green and his
wry smile all over town, annoying the heck out of
everyone he meets, especially Ruiz (Sean "P-Diddy"
Combs), who is their connection. The film is
beautifully shot by master cinematographer
Christopher Doyle, who recently filmed Wong
Kar-Wai's stunning IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE. Bobby and
Ricky make the perfect pair; Favreau is often silent
in scenes, watching deadpan as Vaughn steals the
show as the brazen, overbearing, but lovable Ricky.
To lend authenticity to the film, Favreau shot it in
such landmarks as Hollywood High, Tavern on the
Green, and the Central Park Zoo, and he hired
SOPRANOS stars Vincent Pastore (Big Pussy), Federico
Castelluccio (Furio), and Drea de Matteo (Adriana)
to further the mob connection. The film was
coproduced by Peter Billingsley, who played Ralphie
in 1983's beloved A CHRISTMAS STORY.

The Sopranos (1999)
[TV-Series 1999-2007]
An innovative look at the life of
fictional Mafia Capo Tony Soprano, this serial is presented
largely first person, but additional perspective is conveyed by
the intimate conversations Tony has with his psychotherapist. We
see Tony at work, at home, and in therapy. Moments of black comedy
intersperse this aggressive, adult drama, with adult language, and
extreme violence.
North Jersey mob boss, Tony
Soprano, self-described "waste management consultant,"
reluctantly seeks a psychiatrist's help after blacking out. Lest
he appear weak, he must keep his therapy a secret from the rest of
the Mob. He's stressed: his teenage daughter is giving his wife
fits; his mean-spirited mother refuses to move to a retirement
community; his aging Uncle Junior, jealous of Tony's rise to the
top, won't stay in line and engineers a plot to kill Tony; and the
feds, armed with RICO, are circling. In therapy, Tony must come to
terms with the circumstances of his father's death, with his
mother's manipulations, and with his fears of death and loss of
family.
