becomes the target of several terrorist attacks in this gripping
political thriller ripped from newspaper headlines. Denzel
Washington stars as Anthony "Hub" Hubbard, the head of
the FBI terrorism task force who is charge of investigating the
bombings. Ironically, Hub's partner, Frank Haddad (Tony Shalhoub),

citizens of New York become increasingly paranoid about the
Arab-American population. Elise Kraft (Annette Bening) is an
undercover CIA official and Middle East expert who is also
investigating the terrorist attacks and joins Hub and Frank as
they search for the terrorists. As Hub, Elise, and Frank work to
uncover the source of the terrorism, the city erupts in escalating
madness, spiraling out of control until the government sends in
General William Devereaux (Bruce Willis), who takes over the city
and declares martial law. Ultimately, the government seizes the
male Arab-American population of New York in makeshift internment
camps in this incredibly relevant and cautionary thriller that
examines the real dilemma of how a democratic society can uphold
the rights of its citizens while under military protection.
Director Edward Zwick's film features excellent performances from
an all-star cast and includes real footage of President Clinton
addressing the problem of terrorism.

Crimson
Tide (1995)
Action/Adventure
When Russian rebels gain control of nuclear weapons in the
USSR, the United States retaliates by deploying the USS Alabama, a
nuclear submarine commanded by Captain Frank Ramsey (Gene Hackman).
Veteran soldier and Naval legend Ramsey selects Lt. Commander Ron
Hunter (Denzel Washington)--a Harvard graduate who prefers using
brains over weapons--as his Executive Officer. While submerged,
the Alabama is attacked by a Russian sub and loses radio contact
just as an order is being transmitted from headquarters. Old Navy
dog Ramsey firmly believes that the interrupted transmission ends
with an order to fire their nuclear missiles at the Russian
rebels. Hunter, desperate to avoid starting World War III, is
determined to re-establish radio contact and act only after
complete orders are received. Without the second-in-command’s
agreement, the missiles cannot be launched, and soon Ramsey and
Hunter are engaged in a tense battle of wills, forcing the crew to
choose sides. In the tradition of TOP GUN and TRUE ROMANCE,
director Tony Scott keeps the tension running high in this
fast-paced military thriller. Hackman scores as the
tradition-bound Ramsey, and Washington is superb as the thoughtful
young officer who feels compelled to take a stand against his
superior.

Devil
in a Blue Dress (1995)
Drama
The year is 1948, the place is Los Angeles, and Ezekiel
"Easy" Rawlins (Denzel Washington) is a black man who
has just lost his job and is in dire need of money. So, despite
having no experience as a private eye, Easy accepts an assignment
from a seedy man (Tom Sizemore) to find the missing Daphne Monet
(Jennifer Beals), the mistress of a powerful mayoral candidate. As
Rawlins conducts his search, he unexpectedly becomes drawn into a
complex racially-charged web of intrigue involving political
machinations, double-crossings, blackmail, and mysterious deaths.
With the aid of his trigger-happy friend Mouse (Don Cheadle), Easy
must rely on his instincts and neophyte detective skills, not only
to solve the case, but also to save his life. African-American
director Carl Franklin (ONE FALSE MOVE) brings Walter Mosley’s
crime series to life with this dense thriller, aided greatly by
Tak Fujimoto’s sun-soaked photography and an electric soundtrack
reflecting the music of the times. As Easy Rawlins, an everyman
who finds himself an unwilling pawn in a dangerous game of mystery
and murder, Washington delivers an intense performance. It is Don
Cheadle, however, who steals the show, giving his hot-tempered
Mouse a comic humanity that is at once menacing, hysterical, and
unforgettable.

from the director of 1992's THE LAWNMOWER MAN.

Much
Ado About Nothing (1993)
Comedy
When gallant Don Pedro (Denzel Washington), his nefarious
brother Don John (Keanu Reeves), and close confidantes Claudio
(Robert Sean Leonard) and Benedick (Kenneth Branagh) ride
thunderously into the Sicilian village of Messina, romance,
gaiety, and suspicion abound. The men have returned safely from a
war, and soon everyone in the sun-drenched villa is abuzz with
thoughts of love. Claudio, enamored of the purity of the nubile
Hero (Kate Beckinsale), entreats Don Pedro to woo the maiden on
his behalf that evening at a masked ball. Once he's managed the
successful betrothal of Hero to Claudio, Don Pedro has another
plot in mind: he plans to trick Hero's bantering cousin Beatrice
(Emma Thompson) and sworn bachelor Benedick into acknowledging
they've fallen in love. Meanwhile, the villainous Don John, driven
by contempt for his compatriots, has hatched a plot of his own: to
fool Claudio and Don Pedro into believing Hero is unchaste. The
plot works perfectly: sensitive but volatile Claudio denounces her
publicly on their wedding day. All seems lost, and soon the
attempts to set things right include a formal duel, a scheming
friar, a mock memorial and a gaggle of bumbling constables. With
its excellent cast and beautiful Tuscan backdrop, director Kenneth
Branagh's film is a light-hearted adaptation of yet another of
Shakespeare's great plays.

The
Pelican Brief (1993)
Drama
Julia Roberts (ERIN BROCKOVICH) stars in THE PELICAN BRIEF as
sharp law student Darby Shaw whose querying mind gets her into
trouble. A faithful adaptation of John Grisham's (THE FIRM)
best-selling novel, this taut thriller follows the travails that
beset Shaw when her theory on the cause of the deaths of two
Supreme Court Justices lands her name on the conspirators' hit
list. When Shaw teams up with reporter Gray Grantham (Denzel
Washington--THE HURRICANE) they find themselves dodging deadly
assassins in a suspenseful story that weaves complex narrative
strands. The well-cast film also features a cameo by
playwright-actor Sam Shepard (TRUE WEST).

Philadelphia
(1993)
Drama
Tom Hanks plays Andrew Beckett, a hotshot Philadelphia lawyer
who has been keeping his homosexuality, and his AIDS, hidden from
his conservative bosses. When he's suddenly and inexplicably
fired, Andrew suspects AIDS is the reason, and is determined to
fight in court, even as he is losing his other battle, against the
disease. Beckett hires attorney Joe Miller (Denzel Washington) to
represent him, but the lawyer must first overcome his own
homophobia and fears. Director Jonathan Demme filmed this after
winning the Oscar for SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. The amazing cast
includes Antonio Banderas, Joanne Woodward, and Jason Robards.
Roger Corman and Charles Napier, both in LAMBS, make appearances.
Bruce Springsteen's haunting song "Streets of
Philadelphia" plays over the memorable opening credits. This
sensitive, moody film touches on a vast array of subjects
surrounding gay and straight men, family, and death, without ever
being maudlin or preachy, which is to its immense credit. An
undoubted influence on society's growing acceptance of
homosexuality, PHILADELPHIA reminds us how far we've come in that
direction, and how far we still need to go.

Malcolm
X (1992)
Drama
Spike Lee brings the life of African-American leader Malcolm X
(an intense Denzel Washington in an Oscar-nominated performance)
to the big screen in this sprawling, epic biographical drama. Born
Malcolm Little, son of a Nebraska preacher, on May 19, 1925, he
became one of the most militant leaders and charismatic spokesmen
of the black liberation movement before his assassination at the
Audubon Ballroom in New York City on February 21, 1965. The film
sweeps through his early life as a small-time hustler and thief
with his friend Shorty (Lee), his conversion to Islam in jail, and
his subsequent life as a controversial spiritual leader and
husband of Betty Shabazz (Angela Bassett). Malcolm's tragic
assassination is presented as a conspiracy of Nation of Islam
leaders; the film shows how his philosophy has been realized in
the lives of others who have been moved by his words. Filmed with
great visual flair by Lee, the film is a work of entertainment as
much as it is a historical artifact. Washington captures the
spiritual conversion of the hero with a sincerity that is entirely
as believable and ultimately moving as it was in the book that
inspired the film, THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MALCOLM X.

Mo'
Better Blues (1990)
Drama
Spike Lee ventures into the world of jazz music with this
stylish romantic drama. Forced by his mother to study the trumpet,
Bleek Gilliam (Denzel Washington) has grown up to become the
leader of a successful jazz quintet. Managed by his inept friend,
Giant (Lee), Bleek clashes with fellow band member Shadow
Henderson (Wesley Snipes). Making matters worse is Bleek’s
romantic situation: trying to balance two different women at the
same time--schoolteacher Indigo Downes (Joie Lee) and aspiring
singer Clarke Bentancourt (Cynda Williams). In a hysterical
moment, the line is blurred when, while making love, Bleek calls
each woman by the other’s name. As he struggles to keep the
quintet alive and flourishing, he must decide once and for all
what it is he really wants: Indigo, Clarke, or his trumpet. The
son of jazz musician Bill Lee, who contributes music to the film,
Lee has written a script that crackles with witty
behind-the-scenes banter that feels natural and fresh. Ernest R.
Dickerson’s camera moves at an even brisker pace than in other
Lee films, which compliments the bouncy soundtrack, making MO’
BETTER BLUES an entertaining ride.

Glory
(1989)
Action/Adventure
GLORY recounts the bravery of a group of Civil War soldiers
often overlooked by history--the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts, a
troop of free black men who fought to help win liberty for their
enslaved brothers. Based on the historical novels ONE GALLANT RUSH
by Peter Burchand and LAY THIS LAUREL by Lincoln Kirstein and the
letters of Robert Gould Shaw, the film follows the youthful
Colonel Shaw (Matthew Broderick) as he takes responsibility for
readying these soldiers for battle. Shaw, a privileged young
Boston Brahman, finds the job harder than expected because many of
the men balk at taking orders from him. Private Trip (Denzel
Washington) is especially resistant to Shaw's leadership, but over
time the two come to an understanding as they endure the hardships
of the war. On July 18, 1863, Shaw volunteers the 54th for the
honor of leading the charge against Ft. Wagner, a mission that
means almost certain death, with Trip carrying the regiment's
colors into battle. This gritty and realistic vision of the
horrors of war is a moving and critical examination of a lost
piece of history. Beautifully shot and triumphantly acted (by a
cast that also includes Morgan Freeman, Cary Elwes, and Andre
Braugher), director Edward Zwick's film serves as a tribute to the
courage and selfless bravery of the black soldiers of the Civil
War.
