After the death of his younger
brother, a troubled 19-year-old street dancer from Los Angeles is
able to bypass juvenile hall by enrolling in the historically
black, Truth University in Atlanta, Georgia. But his efforts to
get an education and woo the girl he likes are sidelined when he
is courted by the top two campus fraternities, both of which want
and need his fierce street-style dance moves to win the highly
coveted national step show competition.

2003 and was the first teen drama to capture critics and audiences alike since Beverly Hills 90210 a decade earlier. The series, created by Josh Schwartz, debuted on August 5, 2003, with the tagline, "It's nothing like where you live, and nothing like you imagine." The series has been noted for its music selections, which have helped some previously little-known bands (such as alternative band Phantom Planet, who performed the theme song to the show, "California") gain exposure, so much that to date, the producers have released five compilation albums featuring highlighted performers.
