I've loved
Mariah Carey since I was young. I loved
Aaliyah. But I'm a diehard
Janet Jackson fan. A lot of people compare my video for "Me & U" to hers for "Pleasure Principle." That wasn't my intention.
I was just rehearsing in the studio, they filmed me and the record label thought it would be great for the video. I'd love to emulate Janet's career -- totally. She's incredible, from her moves to her voice.
I have a new single coming called "Long Way to Go." It's about a guy that's trying to push up on me and I'm basically telling him he's not even close. I rap on it, kind of in a sing songy way. I hate getting compared, but it's sort of like
Nelly
Furtado's song "Promiscuous."
I
actually did my first show was out in San Jose. The second day I did
Portland and it was a big radio show that had Rihanna
on it, Bow
Wow, Dem Franchize Boyz, Bubba Sparxx, E-40 it was just like a big
group. They are really popular in the music industry and I was a little
intimidated because I was the new one.
But
I walked out on stage and I performed a song that nobody knew but I
performed the hell out of it I nearly killed myself. And then "Me
& U" came on and everybody was singing with me and that was the
weirdest feeling 18,000 people singing your song with you. It was crazy.
I
am very surprised. Half the time it's like "What just
happened?" Its seriously like spiraling out of control because I'm
trying to catch up with it. I can't really believe it and I don't think
a lot of people on the Internet can believe it either. That's a question
that I get asked a lot. "What's going on?" "Can you even
believe what's happening?"
My
mom saves everything. I love it. She has this huge poster from Target
and Delia's in our house.
I'm actually pretty shy; I'm a good girl. But... in high school I used to occasionally skip class and go shopping. But never too often, I guess that's not so bad.
Not for me. I was always so proud. I thought it was cool because I didn't know anyone like me. But when I was younger I definitely looked awkward. When I was growing up my hair started getting really frizzy -- it looked crazy. Luckily, it's not so bad now.
Amazing!
It couldn’t be any better than that, ya know? When I was on MTV for
the first time, they told me that, and I didn’t even know what to say.
That was like the best compliment I’ve ever had. She is definitely one
of my idols.
My family has always been supportive. My mom's in my corner. When I used to go on modeling auditions, and I had to travel back and forth to New York City a lot and if I looked stressed, she'd ask me if this is what I wanted to do. My dad is there for me too. He would take me into the city when I was 14 to meet with modeling agencies. I also have an older brother, Rod. He's my best friend.
The
down side is that when people meet me they think they really know me.
It’s good, but it’s kind of scary at times. I was in rehearsal
before I shot the video, and some guy walked in my rehearsal and was
like, “Hi Cassie!” I’m like, “Yeah. Hi?” Then he’s like,
“Oh, we’re friends on MySpace, so…” It’s kind of weird in
public when I see people and they’re like, “Heyyy” and I’m like
“I’m sorry!” I don’t know every one of my friends on my page. I
wish I did, but I can’t.
When
I do blog, it’s often, and then I won’t for a while because I get
busy. I’ll blog on my personal page and my MySpace page. I think the
way I write –I don’t know if people just don’t know sometimes that
it’s just a bulletin, like it goes out to all of my friends or just to
them- but when I explain something, I really have to explain it. Some
people just don’t get it and they get offended like, “Why are you
saying this to me.” I’m just like, “Look don’t advertise on my
page if that’s all you’re doing there”
My favorite song is "Not With You." It's a song a co-wrote and it's based on a very personal experience. Basically, I loved this guy but when I wasn't with him, I couldn't trust him. I think a lot of woman can relate.
Well when I was younger, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Rod and I realized that we really needed each other. We got really close and that bond changed the way we looked at each other.
He's
a funny guy. He's a character if you've seen him on his blogs and
everything. You know we go in and all of the records we've done he
starts the beat. I'm like "yes" or "no." "Do
you want it this fast? And the music and humming along "What do you
want to sing about?" and I will talk about situations that I was
going through at the time and we'll talk about that and it comes
straight from the heart that's why it works out well between us when we
are putting it together but he's a lot of fun to work with because he
really listens to what I have to say. It's not just like straight
producer and I can't say anything.
Well
I'm very proud of it. I realized that with Myspace and the Internet in
general I have a wide range of fans. People even saying "I don't
listen to your type of music but I love this song and I can't wait to
hear more from you." Stuff like that. So I was like "Let me do
something across the board." I rap, I sing, I do my R&B, I do
my slow songs and stuff that the girls will love, I have a down South
joint, I have a rock song that I did with my girls this band called
Pretty Boys. They perform at CBGB's, they are totally rock &
roll.
I
have everything and I'm so excited for people to get it and pick their
favorite songs and totally vibe out because it has everything. It has
some funk, some old stuff, it's really fun.
I
am finished recording the album. We are just doing a few bonus tracks
here and there for different stores and stuff like that but the album
itself is finished.
I've talked to him a few times. He called me to congratulate me about the video debut and the song's success but nothing more.
There
is no room for it and I was looking at pictures last night and looking
at portfolio's of my friends and looking through stuff because I'm
actually moving today, but I was just like…I miss it. It's kind of sad
because it was such a big part of my life for such a long time. I
definitely miss it. We also can't have me doing too much like I'm doing
all this radio & promo.
That
was more for humor. I don't think a lot of people got that they must
have been thinking "She's such an idiot."
