Fight Club represents that kind of freedom.

Meet Joe Black (1998)
Drama and
Romance
This modern fantasy stars Anthony Hopkins as
William Parrish, a wealthy New York City media
mogul who suffers a heart attack on the eve of
his 65th birthday; although he survives, he
senses that his own death is near. On the same
day, Parrish's younger daughter, Susan, (Claire
Forlani), meets a handsome young stranger (Brad
Pitt) at a neighboring coffee shop and is
instantly smitten. As they part, the young
stranger is killed and his body is instantly
occupied by Death, who is coming to Earth to
warn Parrish that his death is, indeed,
imminent. Death enters the Parrish household
disguised as Joe Black, the handsome stranger,
and although Parrish realizes Death's intentions
he lets the family believe that Joe Black is a
young business associate. Susan is shocked to
find the familiar young man at her family dinner
that evening and is instantly overwhelmed with
desire. As she begins a passionate love affair
with the debonaire stranger, she has no idea
that she is no longer falling for the young
stranger from the coffee shop but for Death
himself. In an effort to prolong his life and
his daughter's happiness, William agrees to take
Joe on a tour of human life that includes board
meetings, family parties, and, ultimately,
romance. As long as Joe falls in love, Parrish
remains alive. This version was inspired by the
Alberto Casella play DEATH TAKES A HOLIDAY and
the subsequent 1934 film.

The Devil's Own (1997)
Drama
THE DEVIL’S OWN, Alan J. Pakula's last
film, is a character-driven thriller that
confronts suspense and gritty realism head-on.
Harrison Ford plays Tom O'Meara, an
Irish-American cop in New York who opens his
home and family to Francis "Frankie"
McGuire (Brad Pitt), whom they believe is a
refuge-seeking immigrant from Belfast. They
later discover that their visitor is an IRA
rebel on a terrorist mission. Buoyed by tense,
strong performances from both stars, the film is
ultimately a tragedy that explores the
unexpected friendship of two men of similar
ethnic roots, yet of different places, times,
and values, and the cruel and senseless cycle of
violence they face.

Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen in the mid-1960s.
When these four friends pull a prank that that
goes awry, they find themselves serving time at
the Wilkinson School for Boys, where they are
repeatedly and sadistically violated and

later, the foursome is still dealing with the
emotional repercussions of their abuse. Tommy
(Billy Crudup) and John (Ron Eldard) have become
common criminals, and when they spot Noles in a
local watering hole they can’t pass up the
chance for revenge. It’s up to Shakes (Jason
Patric), a low-profile newspaper employee, and
Michael (Brad Pitt), a lawyer with the district
attorney’s office, to save their friends while
keeping the details of their tortured childhoods
secret. Dustin Hoffman appears as Danny Snyder,
and Robert De Niro stars as Father Bobby, the
local neighborhood priest who is as comfortable
on the streets or in a bar as he is behind the
pulpit. Based on the allegedly true story by
Lorenzo Carcaterra, the film is directed by
Barry Levinson (DINER, RAIN MAN).

Science
Fiction/Fantasy
When a man enters a hospital claiming to
have journeyed back in time from the year 2025
to stop a killer virus from exterminating
mankind, a beautiful psychologist decides he
might be more than delusional. Terry Gilliam
populates this labyrinthine, apocalyptic film
with twisted characters and eerie revelations.
The film was shot primarily in Philadelphia;
Gilliam uses the more dilapidated area of the
city to the film's apocalyptic advantage. The
film is based on the 1962 French short film LA
JETEE. The Signature Laserdisc includes a
feature on the film's making.

Seven (1995)
Drama and
Thriller
127 min.
Gluttony, greed, sloth, envy, wrath, pride,
and lust--these are the seven deadly sins that
are being punished with unimaginable cruelty and
calculation by an enigmatic killer in David
Fincher's bleak thriller SEVEN. Set in a
perpetually gloomy unnamed city, the film
follows Somerset (Morgan Freeman), a retiring
police detective, as he experiences his final
week on the job, reluctantly working with
assertive newcomer Mills (Brad Pitt). When an
obese man is found brutally murdered in his
home, the seasoned Somerset realizes this is no
ordinary killing--someone tortured him because
of his appetite. Slayings that reflect the sins
of greed and sloth soon follow, leading Somerset
and Mills on a desperate search to find the
mysterious John Doe, who is responsible for
these methodical murders. As the case builds to
a startling conclusion, both Somerset and Mills
become more involved than they ever could have
imagined.
After a brief opening scene, SEVEN immediately
cuts to a highly stylized title sequence. An
intricate collage of books and photos, scissors
and razors, and blood and skin eerily captures
the dark, graphic tone of Fincher's intriguing
mystery. The film cleverly avoids depicting most
acts of violence onscreen, focusing instead on
the cryptic remains of the crimes, allowing
viewers to investigate along with the
detectives. An example of nearly flawless
filmmaking, the movie features a meticulously
crafted screenplay, brilliant photography and
design, sure-handed direction, and excellent
performances from the entire cast. All of these
elements combine to amazing effect in the film's
unforgettably stunning finale.

Interview with the Vampire
(1994)
Suspense/Horror
Horror author Anne Rice penned the
screenplay for this full-blooded adaptation of
her novel, which chronicles the life of
18th-century nobleman Louis (Brad Pitt) after he
is bitten by powerful, charismatic vampire
Lestat (Tom Cruise). Though enthralled with the
undead lifestyle at first, Louis is unable to
warm up to killing humans and grows despondent.
To comfort Louis, Lestat creates another vampire
(Kirsten Dunst in a star-making peformance), a
young girl who from then on cannot age. Antonio
Banderas appears as Armand, a 400-year-old
vampire, and Christian Slater plays the radio
producer who interviews the remorseful Louis.
Director Neil Jordan captures the lush decadence
and erotic fervor of the novel, infusing the
film with rich, dusky tones. The big budget is
well used to bring each period and place to
sharply detailed life, and there is no skimping
on the blood or immortal angst. Thandie Newton
has a small role as Louis's Creole servant near
the beginning of the film, and Jordan regular
Stephen Rea appears as a Parisian vampire
theater star. INTERVIEW broke weekend box-office
records when it premiered and has since earned a
spot in the pantheon of great vampire films.

Legends of the Fall (1994)
Drama
Director Edward Zwick's epic romance, set
against the backdrop of WWI and the wide sky and
rugged terrain of Montana, stars Anthony Hopkins
as William Ludlow, an idealistic retired colonel
who disapproves of the war and the army's
indecent treatment of Native Americans.
Abandoned by his blue-blooded wife, Ludlow
raises his three sons in the remote foothills of
Montana with the help of Native American
friends. Before the war, Samuel (Henry Thomas)
brings home his fiancיe from the East
Coast, Susannah (Julia Ormond), a stunning
beauty who can ride, rope, and hunt like the
Ludlow boys. When the war breaks out, Samuel,
the youngest and most idealistic son, enlists in
the army. Brothers Alfred (Aidan Quinn) and
Tristan (Brad Pitt) follow suit, more as
protectors than as cohorts. Despite their best
efforts, however, Samuel dies in battle. Upon
returning home, Tristan becomes involved with
Susannah, who is devastated by her loss but
profoundly attracted to the brooding brother.
However, tormented by his inability to save his
little brother's life, Tristan abandons her and
sets out on a long journey of self-discovery.
During his absence, Alfred reveals his own
passion for Susannah. Although she does not
reciprocate his feelings, Susannah--who has
despaired of ever seeing Tristan again--agrees
to become his wife. Ultimately, Tristan does
return, setting off a dangerous conflict between
the brothers.

Kalifornia (1993)
Drama

serial killers, journalist Brian Kessler (David
Duchovny) is so fascinated that he decides to
co-author a book on homicidal maniacs with his
exhibitionist-photographer girlfriend Carrie
Laughlin (Michelle Forbes). En route to
California, where the bored yuppies plan to
build a new life in a land more receptive to
Carrie's art, they pick up an unusual couple,
Early Grayce (Brad Pitt) and Adele Corners (Juliette
Lewis). Conveniently, Grayce happens to be a
serial killer and serves, along the way, as
Brian's in-house specimen. Soon Brian learns
that having a real-life murderer in his car is a
lot different--and more dangerous--than his
long-distance obsession with killers led him to
imagine.

True Romance (1993)
Action/Adventure
and Crime/Gangster
When inexperienced call girl Alabama Whitman
(Patricia Arquette) is paid to seduce
comic-book-nerd and Elvis fanatic Clarence
Worley (Christian Slater), she doesn’t expect
to fall for him. But these two lost souls seem
to be made for each other and quickly pledge
their love, marrying at Detroit's city hall.
Clarence discovers some newfound bravado and
attempts to retrieve Alabama’s possessions
from her pimp, Drexl (Gary Oldman), who isn’t
exactly eager to let Alabama go. Fleeing Drexl's
apartment, Clarence not only leaves a trail of
bodies, but also inadvertently mistakes a
suitcase of uncut cocaine for one with his
wife’s clothing, and the chase is on. The
unlikely newlyweds head for Los Angeles hoping
to sell the cocaine and make enough money to
leave the country. Unfortunately, they also have
to contend with the mob, yuppie drug dealers and
the police. Michael Rapaport is amusing as
Clarence’s best friend who lives with Floyd, a
stoner played by Brad Pitt. A sedate Dennis
Hopper appears as Clarence’s father, who
ultimately faces off with mob boss Vincenzo
Coccotti (Christopher Walken). Director Tony
Scott (CRIMSON TIDE, ENEMY OF THE STATE) does
justice to the violence and quirkiness of
Quentin Tarantino’s second feature film
script.

Cool World (1992)
Science
Fiction/Fantasy
This energetic blend of live-action and
animation was director Ralph Bakshi's answer to
WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT and marked his return to
feature films after an eight-year hiatus. The
story follows two humans who encounter Cool
World--a parallel universe where cartoons
actually exist--and tangle with the seductive
Holli Would (Kim Basinger), an ambitious
animated bombshell determined to escape into
three-dimensional reality. Gabriel Byrne plays
Jack Deebs, the comic book artist who created
and then is seduced by Holli; and Brad Pitt
plays Detective Frank Harris, the Cool World cop
out to make sure humans don't have sex with
cartoon characters, since that act can rupture
the fabric between the two universes. Of course
the rupturing occurs, and all sorts of
freewheeling animated hell breaks loose as
cartoon misfits of all shapes and sizes invade
the city of Las Vegas. With a thumping techno
score that includes tracks from Moby and David
Bowie and such goofy touches as Holli singing
"Let's Make Love" with Frank Sinatra
Jr., COOL WORLD is definitely a freaky place to
visit.

Johnny Suede (1992)
Comedy
Brad Pitt plays Johnny Suede, an ultra-cool
Brooklyn rocker with a sweet and naive
disposition and a healthy ego. And he always has
a good hair day. Writer/director Tom DiCillo
(THE REAL BLONDE, LIVING IN OBLIVION) tells the
tale of a boyish wanna be rocker who wears cool
suede and a ceiling busting pompadour to get his
attitude in gear. One of Brad Pitt's earlier
movie acting roles.

A River Runs Through It
(1992)
Drama
Fly-fishing figures prominently in this
poignant tale of two brothers growing up in
Montana in the early 20th century under the
stern rule of their minister father. While both
boys rebel, Norman (Craig Sheffer) channels his
rebellion into writing, but Paul (Brad Pitt)
descends onto a slippery path of
self-destruction. The beautiful scenery of
Montana is used to full effect with the awesome
cinematography of Philippe Rousselot. Directed
by Robert Redford, this adaptation of Norman
Maclean's classic autobiography also features
Tom Skerritt and Brenda Blethyn as the Reverend
and Mrs. Maclean.

Thelma & Louise (1991)
Fed up with her
boyfriend (Michael Madsen), live-wire Arkansas
waitress Louise Sawyer (Susan Sarandon)
persuades her friend Thelma Dickinson (Geena
Davis), a naive housewife burdened with a
negligent, sexist husband (Christopher
McDonald), to hit the road with her for a
weekend of freedom. One of their first stops is
a bar where the women relax, dance, and flirt
with some of the locals. But the situation turns
ugly when one man (Timothy Carhart) follows
Thelma to the parking lot and attempts to rape
her, causing Louise to shoot and accidentally
kill him. Convinced that the police will never
believe their version of the incident, the women
take off, now fugitives from the law. Emboldened
by recent events, Thelma picks up studly young
cowboy J.D. (Brad Pitt) in Oklahoma and enjoys a
one-night stand that leads to even more trouble.
Director Ridley Scott's infamous feminist road
movie ranks among the best films of the 1990s.
Along with BLADE RUNNER and ALIEN, the film is
one of Scott's finest works, largely because of
Callie Khourie's vivid, brilliantly
idiosyncratic script, wonderful performances
from the two leads, and Adrian's Biddle's crisp
photography of the American Southwest.

Too Young to Die (1990)
Drama
The made-for-TV drama TOO YOUNG TO DIE?
presents a tragic story of manipulation and
murder that touches on the hot topic debate over
the death penalty. Juliette Lewis and Brad Pitt
star, before they became huge Hollywood icons.
Amanda (Lewis) is a 15 year-old girl who has
lived a rough childhood. When her stepfather
abuses her, Amanda's mother places the blame on
her and kicks her out of their house. Desperate
and ignorant, she takes up with immoral hustler
Billy (Pitt), who hooks her on drugs and makes
her a prostitute. She has one last chance with a
kindly divorced man (Michael Tucker), who
ultimately must distance himself from her
because of his career. Enraged, Amanda and Billy
embark on a drug-fueled murder spree. TOO YOUNG
TO DIE? questions the justice of a system where
a lost soul like Amanda can suffer such a tragic
fate.

Across the Tracks (1989)
This frank drama
contrasts the lives of two brothers who are
opposite in a almost every way. Joe (Brad Pitt)
is the perfect son and athlete obsessed with his
dream of a track scholarship. His brother Billy

paroled from reform school. When Joe talks Billy
into joining a rival school's track team, he
unexpectedly finds himself racing against his
own brother and possibly killing his scholarship

Pitt and Schroder are fantastic as the bickering
brothers who can't seem to come to a truce.
