Madagascar (2005) Comedy,
Kids/Family and Animation
This movie focuses on four residents and "stars"
of the Central Park Zoo in New York City who are also best
friends: a lion (Stiller), a zebra (Rock), a giraffe (Schwimmer)
and a pregnant hippo (Smith). When one of them goes missing, the
other three break out of the zoo looking for him, and eventually
all four are captured and put in boxes to ship them back to the
continent their species are originally from: Africa. An accident
at sea, however, strands them on the shore of Madagascar. Having
had humans take care of them their entire life, the four know
nothing of surviving in the wild, or that one of them, the lion,
is genetically predisposed to eat his three best friends.
Exploring their surroundings, the four friends soon meet the
Malagasy locals (a type of lemur given to having loud
"rave-like" dance parties) and their carnivorous
enemies, the fousas. As the two sides try to use these four new,
strange (and large) friends to their benefit, our heroes are
also confronted with the reality of their predestined roles in
nature.

Hackman) and his wife
Etheline (Anjelica Huston) had three children -- Chas (Ben
Stiller), Richie (Luke Wilson) and Margot (Gwyneth Paltrow) --

understanding of international finance. Margot was a playwright
and received a Braverman Grant of fifty thousand dollars in the
ninth grade. Richie was a junior champion tennis player and won
the U.S. Nationals three years in a row. Virtually all memory of
the brilliance of the young Tenenbuams was subsequently erased
by two decades of betrayal, failure, and disaster. Most of this
was generally considered to be their father's fault. "THE
ROYAL TENENBAUMS" tells the story of a family's sudden,
unexpected reunion one recent winter.

Keeping the Faith (2000)
Comedy and
Romance
In actor Edward Norton's directorial debut, Brian (Norton),
a priest, and his best friend, Jake (Ben Stiller), a rabbi, both
fall in love with their long-lost childhood friend, Anna (Jenna
Elfman), who has returned to Manhattan to pursue her hectic
business career. However, Brian has taken a vow of celibacy, and
Jake is constantly being set up by Jewish mothers in his temple.
The workaholic Anna isn't Jewish, but this doesn't stop her from
returning Jake's affection and beginning a relationship that
they hide from Brian. As their relationship progresses,
complications arise, leading Jake, Brian, and Anna to deal with
questions of both religious and romantic faith.
As Rabbi Jake, Stiller once again displays his excellent comic
timing, and his scenes with Elfman, Norton, and Anne Bancroft
(as Jake's traditional Jewish mother) carry KEEPING THE FAITH.
Set in lushly filmed New York City, Norton's film exhudes an
innocent charm that's sure to please audiences of all
denominations.

Your Friends &
Neighbors (1998)
Comedy and
Drama
Neil LaBute's second film, YOUR FRIENDS & NEIGHBORS, is
a dark comedy of manners that follows two unhappy couples and
their single friends through a series of emotional and physical
entanglements. Barry (Aaron Eckhart) and Mary (Amy Brenneman)
are a married couple plagued by sexual frustration. Their friend
Jerry (Ben Stiller), a theater professor, lives with his
girlfriend, Terri (Catherine Keener), who's sick of his endless
bedroom banter. Added to the fold are Cary (Jason Patric), a
narcissistic, womanizing doctor, and Cheri (Nastassja Kinski), a
free-spirited gallery assistant. While Jerry hopes to have an
affair with Mary, Terri strikes up a relationship with Cheri,
leading to a host of humorously painful conflicts.
Cleverly framed by scenes in which each character examines the
same painting in Cheri's gallery, the film presents an
unflinchingly harsh look at relationships. More than anything
else, it pinpoints--with hilarious effect--the human inability
to communicate. Perfectly cast and expertly acted, YOUR FRIENDS
& NEIGHBORS furthers LaBute's reputation as a challengingly
original filmmaker.

humanity--except for his partner and "translator." But
a suspect in the case, a lovely paramedic, engages in a battle
of wits with Zero, bringing him out of his shell and
complicating the case. An engaging and disarmingly fresh first
effort from Kasdan.

The Cable Guy (1996)
Comedy
When a young urbanite calls to order cable TV for his
apartment he gets much more than he bargained for, as the
demented title character arrives and proceeds to insinuate his
way into the beleaguered customer's life. Raised by television
as a child and starved for human contact, the "cable
guy" is a darkly hilarious carnation of the modern age.
Carey's manic karaoke rendition of Jefferson Airplane's
"Somebody to Love" is a twisted highlight.

Flirting with Disaster
(1996)
Comedy
Writer-director David O. Russell follows up his dark
independent comedy SPANKING THE MONKEY with this hilarious romp
about a man who goes on a quest to find his biological parents.
Mel Coplin (Ben Stiller), a new father, is convinced that he
won’t be able to give his son a name until he reunites with
his real mother and father. So Mel, his depressed, neglected
wife, Nancy (Patricia Arquette), and a sexy adoption consultant
named Tina (Tea Leoni) set out to find them. By the time they
reach the New Mexico home of Mel's true parents (Alan Alda and
Lily Tomlin)--two laid-back hippie scientists who are in the LSD
business--Mel’s marriage appears to be completely demolished.
But the wackiness doesn't end there, since his neurotic,
overbearing adoptive parents (George Segal and Mary Tyler Moore)
arrive just in time to add even greater confusion to the mix.
Russell assembles a cast who have contributed greatly to the
development of American screen comedy, and they throw themselves
into their roles with great fervor. Commenting on identity,
sexual and cultural prejudice, and the convention of marriage,
Russell’s script is a farcical laugh-fest that is at once
intelligent, fast-paced, and witty. His assured, grounded
direction makes FLIRTING WITH DISASTER’s humor all the more
outrageous and hysterical.

Empire of the Sun (1987)
Drama
Steven Spielberg’s EMPIRE OF THE SUN, based on the
autobiographical novel by J.G. Ballard, stars Christian Bale as
Jim Graham, a British schoolboy separated from his upper-class
colonial parents when the Japanese sweep into Shanghai during
World War II. Temporarily orphaned, Jim attaches himself to
Basie (John Malkovich), a fast-talking American opportunist
determined make a buck off the spoils of war. Later, when the
two are interned in a prison camp, Jim's boyish fantasies are
fueled by the grace and daring of the Japanese fighter pilots
whom he comes to idolize despite their enemy status. Spielberg's
visually spectacular wartime epic is a testimony to the human
will to survive and a child's ability to find wonder even in the
midst of horror. Thirteen-year-old Welsh actor Christian Bale is
brillant as Jim in his feature film debut. Spielberg himself
identified more with Jim, a boy who is obsessed with flying and
who experiences the death of his innocence, than with E.T.’s
Elliott. After a year of negotiations with the Chinese,
Spielberg and his crew were allowed to film in Shanghai, which
was virtually unchanged since World War II.
