The Corrs Biography

The Corrs are one of the world's most successful pop groups, although they've yet to enjoy the same level of popularity in America that they've attained across Europe and Japan. Nonetheless, in 1999, with the success of the single "So Young" they've shown signs that the United States might be within their grasp.

The Irish group consists of three sisters and a brother: Andrea on lead vocals, Sharon on violin, Caroline on drums and bodhran, and Jim on keyboards and guitars. Sporting an athletically attractive presence, the group presents a seamless sound built around glossy group harmonies and a carefully produced, rhythm-centered blend of acoustic and electronic instrumentation.

Formed in 1991, the quartet used its background in traditional Irish music to add an international dimension to a slick dance-pop sound. From the start, the group's Celtic pop and energetic performance style proved popular in its native country. But the Corrs didn't branch beyond regional popularity until Celine Dion employed the family quartet as opening act on her 1996 international tour.

The band's 1996 album, Forgiven, Not Forgotten, became one of the best-selling CDs in Irish music history and expanded the band's success across Europe. In 1998, the Corrs collaborated with several of top American producers and mixers--David Foster, Glen Ballard, Billy Steinberg, and Bob Clearmountain--to create Talk On Corners, their second U.S. album.

Again, the album was an enormous international success, selling more than 8 million copies worldwide. But America largely ignored it. The group returned with a revised version, Talk On Corners: Special Edition, that featured edgier remixes by such cutting-edge mixologists as Todd Terry, K-Klass, and Tin Tin Out. The album included the hit version of "So Young" as well as the Corrs' interpretation of "Dreams" that had been included in a Fleetwood Mac tribute.

In 1999, to add to the group's recognition, the Corrs toured with the Rolling Stones and appeared on Saturday Night Live, The Tonight Show With Jay Leno and other high-profile programs.
