Timeline
Alicia Keys burst into the
music scene in 2001 with her blend of soul and hip-hop (with jazz and
classical thrown in) and a style and finesse on the piano not heard in
years. Alicia grew up in New York and began work on what would become
her debut LP at the age of 14. Her talent was evident early with study
at the Professional Performance Arts School in Manhattan. Alicia
finished high school by the age of 16, and she attended Columbia
University before deciding to make music her focus. She signed with
Arista Records in 1998 and followed Clive Davis to his new label - J
Records. Alicia could first be heard on the soundtrack for Men In Black
with "Dah Dee Dah (Sexy Thing)" and Shaft with "Rock Wit
U".

June

July

selling over 235,000 copies in its first week of release, and staying at
#1 for 3 weeks.

+ Alicia performed "Someday We'll All Be Free" for a landmark
fundraiser (America: A Tribute To Heroes) aired by all the major networks
to raise money for families of the victims of recent terrorist attacks.
+ Alicia performed on the season premier of Saturday Night Live.
+ Alicia could be heard on the All-Star Tribute benefit single

Live 8 concerts. The mission of the concerts was to raise awareness of the
on-going poverty in Africa and to pressure the G8 leaders to take action
by doubling aid, canceling debt, and delivering trade justice for Africa.

+ The video for "Karma" won a MTV Video Music Award for Best
R&B Video and "My Boo" was also nominated in the category.
+ Alicia performed on ReAct Now: Music & Relief - a benefit program
shown on music video channels to raise money for those affected by
Hurricane Katrina.
