Alicia Keys Look
She’s talented, she’s beautiful and she
sings with a heck of a lotta passion. Alicia, we salute you!
HAIR
When her hair isn’t covered up Alicia’s trademark is those teeny
plaits with beads on the end. Luckily it’s easy to copy. Pull your hair
back into a ponytail, leaving a few locks loose hear and there. Gather
these up into skinny (and we mean skinny!) plaits and tie with a length of
cotton at the ends. Then make the ends into a point with a blob of gel and
thread on a few beads, which you’ll have brought from yer local
department store. A tiny elastic band at the bottom should keep the beads
in place.
TIP
To keep your hair from peeking out when you’re wearing a scarf like
Alicia’s, scrape it back into a low ponytail while it’s still wet (not
very good for your tresses, so don’t do it every day), then smooth down
with strong-hold mousse or gel.
CLOTHES
The key (ha!) to Alicia’s look is neutral colours. Layer them up to
achieve a gorgeous, subtle look. New Look, MK1 and Top Shop do cool white
jeans, for a start. Then get hold of a pretty summer shirt like Alicia’s
from Top Shop, Miss Selfridge, H&M or, if you’re feeling rich,
Warehouse and Oasis. For a similar jacket, try floaty mums-clothes shops
like Noa Noa or East. Most of the stuff is horrid, but you might find
yourself a cool linen coat (you might also have to get your mum to help
you buy it, ‘cause it won’t be cheap).
ACCESSORIES
That scarf looks so gorgeous. You can buy similar at places like
Accessorise, BHS or Debenhams. It’s easy enough to tie it around your
head – the problem is keeping it there. The best thing to do is buy some
toupee tape from the good ol’ department store and stick small lengths
around your forehead to keep the scarf from slipping. Celebs swear by it!
TIP
For a unique fabric belt like Alicia’s, head to the furniture fabric
section of your local department store and get a length of upholstery
fabric. Cut it so when it sits nicely on your hips there’s about 5cm gap
between the ends. Then sew on two 25cm lengths of cord to each end so you
can tie them the middle.
EYES
Alicia knows that slinky feline eye make-up looks beautiful when you have
your hair tied back. First outline your eyes with black liquid eyeliner
– 17 Perfect Definition and Bourjois Liner Parfait Noir are good ‘uns
– sweeping it up slightly at the outer corners. Then smooth on a layer
of pinky brown eyeshadow. We like No 7 Colour Perfect Trio in Aubergine
Dust. Finally, a couple of layers of lengthening black mascara, like
Bourjois Coup de Theatre or Max Factor 2000 Calorie, will finish off the
look.
MOUTH
Heavy eye make-up means Alicia keeps her lip-colour subtle. A pale gloss
is all you need. Try Miss Selfridge Lip Gloss Stack Pot in Sweet T and
Bloom Lip Gloss in Pout.
